Men’s Soccer Blanks Mastodons to Begin 2019

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Marshall men's soccer team kicked off the 2019 season with a 3-0 victory at Purdue Fort Wayne, Friday night. The Herd outshot the home team 19-2.
The Thundering Herd begins the year 1-0. The Mastodons start 0-1.
"A great start to the season," third-year head coach Chris Grassie said. "I thought the lads really played well tonight. It was great to see them implement the things we've been working on over the preseason so perfectly. On another day, it could've been 10-0. But credit to our guys, after every miss the redoubled their efforts.
"I thought we had good performances all over the pitch. Freshmen Milo (Yosef), Max (Schneider), (Ryan) Sirk, Joao (Souza), Bleno (Cruz) and Demarre (Montoute) all fit in really nicely. But our returning players gave them a great platform and stability out there. I thought Pedro Dolabella was particularly good tonight, his hold up play and simplicity really made us tick up front."
The Herd got the offense going early as redshirt freshman Milo Yosef netted his first career goal with the Green & White right at 17:00 on the clock off a pass from freshman Max Schneider to give Marshall the lead, 1-0. The Herd kept up the pressure as eight minutes and 54 seconds later, junior Pedro Dolabella put one in the back of the net on a great pass from freshman Joao Souza.
The first half was a relatively easy period for starting keeper redshirt senior Paulo Pita as he did not face a single shot. Marshall outshot the Mastodons 10-0 in the first 45 minutes with four shots on goal. The Herd defense shut down Purdue Fort Wayne and continued to get the ball back to the offense. Marshall went in at the half up 2-0.
In the second half, the Herd offense kept its foot on the gas but the Mastodons were able to make the adjustment for most of the period. Purdue Fort Wayne's keeper recorded five more saves in the second stanza while the Mastodon offense still struggled to find its rhythm. The home team managed just two shots and Pita recorded one save in the shutout victory.
Sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos tapped in a goal with 18 seconds remaining in the contest to cap off the match, 3-0.
Senior defenders Carlos Diaz-Salcedo and Illal Osmanu played all 90 minutes as did midfielders Schneider and senior Jonas Westmeyer. Pita was in goal the entire match as well for the Herd. Yosef took six shots with three on goal. Leinhos recorded four shots with three on goal as well.
Marshall stays on the road for its next match at Northern Kentucky on Monday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m.
