Marshall kicked off the 2019 season with a dominating 3-0 win at Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday (Aug. 30). The Herd outshot the Mastodons 19-2 and 10-1 in shots on goal. Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef scored the first goal of the game, and of his career, 17 minutes into the match. Almost nine minutes later, junior Pedro Dolabella added a goal and then sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos tapped one by the keeper with 18 seconds remaining. The Marshall defense was outstanding throughout the match in limiting the opportunities for the Mastodons. Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita made the save on the only shot on goal to preserve the shutout, the fourth of his Herd career.

Northern Kentucky began the season out west with a 3-0 loss to Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz. The Lopes got the scoring going right away at just under two minutes into the match. The Norse were outshot 19-8 and 9-1 in shots on goal. The victory gave GCU head coach Schellas Hyndman his 500th Division I win.

NKU returns its top three goal scorers from a year ago who combined for 26 of the team's 37 goals in 2018. Sophomore Alex Willis netted 16 goals, fourth-best in the NCAA, and the most by a freshman. He was held to just one shot in the loss at Grand Canyon. Junior Alex Grieve had five goals and 11 assists in 2018 and was also held to just one shot in the season-opener. In the net, all three goalkeepers on the roster for NKU are new to the team this season with two freshman and one sophomore transfer. Freshman Baj Maan got the start at Grand Canyon and played the entire match. Along with allowing three goals, Maan recorded six saves.

Northern Kentucky was predicted to finish sixth in the Horizon League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
