HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Marshall men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in an exciting double overtime match, despite playing a man down for 102 minutes and 11 seconds, at Northern Kentucky Monday night.
The Thundering Herd is now 1-0-1 while the Norse move to 0-1-1.
"Very proud of the lads tonight," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "To play with 10 men for 102 minutes and still be the better team was impressive. We create lots of chances. I didn't think it was worthy of a straight red card, so we can feel a little bit hard done by. But we rallied as a team and worked hard for each other.
"I'm a little disappointed at the way we conceded as it was a series of small mistakes that led to their goal. But other than that it was a great test for us which I think we passed. This team can do big things with ten men, so with eleven men, the sky is the limit!"
Marshall dropped down to playing with just 10 players in the eighth minute when senior defender Carlos Diaz-Salcedo was issued a red card. The Herd then began to settle in to playing a man down and were still on the attack. Senior Jonas Westmeyer gave Marshall the lead in the 39th minute after beating the defense down the field and then tapping in the rebound after his initial shot was stopped by NKU's keeper. It was the first goal of the season for Westmeyer, fourth of his Herd career.
Marshall outshot NKU 6-5 and 4-0 on goal. The Herd led 1-0 at the break.
The Norse came out blazing in the second half and evened the match just 28 seconds into the period. Throughout the second 45 minutes, NKU outshot Marshall 11-1 and 6-0 on goal. Senior keeper Paulo Pita, despite allowing the goal in the opening moments, played spectacularly through the rest of the time with five saves. Pita made several diving stops as NKU's top scorers couldn't find the back of the net. Things got a little chippy in the second half and a total of four yellow cards were handed out in a span of less than 20 minutes.
90 minutes wasn't enough for these two teams as the match was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation.
NKU continued its charge in overtime, but again Pita and the Herd defense were up to the challenge. The Marshall defenders constantly knocked passes and shot attempts out of the box and cleared the ball downfield a bit to allow players to regroup. The Norse had three shot attempts in the first overtime, none on goal. Marshall had one shot, also not on goal. The first overtime period was also not enough for the teams to settle this one and so the match moved to double overtime.
In the second overtime, NKU held possession for most of the period but the Marshall defense again continued to knock the ball away from the net and keep the match tied. Pita recorded another save with just one minute and 15 seconds remaining. The Herd had one last second effort but the kick sailed wide right just as the horn sounded.
NKU outshot Marshall in the contest 20-9, but the outstanding play of Pita in the net helped the Herd stay in the contest. Pita recorded six saves. Offensively, Marshall had four of its nine shots on goal. Westmeyer has now recorded a point in both contests to start the season as he assisted on the third goal of Marshall's win over Purdue Fort Wayne this past Friday. Junior Jamil Roberts in his first action of the season came off the bench and recorded two shots. Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef took three shots with two on goal.
Marshall returns home to Hoops Family Field for the 2019 home-opener against Butler on Friday, Sept. 6. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
