Marshall Baseball Signs 13 to 2021 Signing Class

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd baseball announced the signing of 13 student-athletes on Monday as part of its 2021 signing class.
"I feel good about the athleticism of the position players," Herd baseball pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Joe Renner said about the position players added to the roster. "We signed a couple of outfielders who are good runners. Ryan Scarry is a plus-runner. We expect both outfielders to be plus-defenders and to hit in the middle of the lineup. Chance Checca has the chance to be a middle of the lineup guy. He'll be a solid defender in the infield, but his calling card is the bat. The two catchers are going to be solid to plus all-around from the defensive and offensive side of the plate. They have good arms and potential with the bat."
"When you look at the pitchers, there is a lot of projection," Renner said about the pitchers coming to Huntington. "They all have good arms and a lot their bodies have good projections. You have a 6-2 lefty and a couple of 6-3 righties. Even some of the smaller guys, in terms of height, there is still projection left in their frames. There is pitch-ability in all of those guys. The expectation is for them to be good when they get here, but they have the chance to be even better."
"There are a lot of good academic kids in this class," Renner said about the academic prowess of the incoming recruits. "We're trying to bring in guys that just aren't really good players, but we're trying to bring in guys who will be getting degrees from Marshall."
"It was a different recruiting scenario with the pandemic," Renner commented on the difficulties of recruiting during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Some of these guys we were able to see in person last year, but a lot we weren't. We had to make a lot of judgments based on live streams and videos. We also put a lot of stock in our contacts, guys who have helped us get more information on guys. Guys we trust who have been around these guys a lot. It was a different year."
