Harrell Drives Herd to two Wins

Junior drives in eight total runs in two victories

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Marshall softball team bounced back on Saturday with wins over the Ohio Bobcats, 6-5, and then the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 6-1, at the Chattanooga Challenge. Junior Aly Harrell drove in four runs in each contest with six combined in the sixth innings.

The Thundering Herd improves to 4-3 overall.

Game One: Marshall 6, Ohio 5
Harrell got going right from the start against the Bobcats with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning as she finished the game going 2-of-3, a double, and one hit-by-pitch to go along with four RBI.

Freshman Ashley Blessin received her first career start in the circle for Marshall and pitched into the fifth inning. Senior Kailee Williamson entered the contest in the fifth and pitched through the sixth. Junior Laney Jones finished the game in the seventh.

The Herd scored two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Sierra Huerta took advantage of an infield error to score the second run of the game. With the bases loaded, Harrell was plunked at the plate to bring home junior Rachel Rousseau.

Ohio responded with one run in the top of the third and then stormed back with four runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

Marshall found its toughness at the plate in the bottom of the sixth as junior Armani Brown led off with a bunt-single. Sophomore Grace Chelemen then also got on board with a bunt-single to put two runners on for Harrell. With a 1-2 count, the junior slugger smacked a double off the fence in right-center scoring both Brown and Chelemen as Marshall took back the lead.

Williamson was credited with the win and Jones picked up her first save in a Marshall uniform holding off the Bobcats, as Ohio stranded the tying run at third.

Chelemen, Rousseau and Brown all tallied two hits each in the win.

Game Two: Marshall 6, Tennessee Tech 1
The Herd defeated the Golden Eagles in the nightcap as Harrell provided the late-game fireworks again.

The two teams battled through two-and-a-half scoreless innings before Marshall got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third. Junior Saige Pye hit a single to right-center that plated Chelemen from second.

Tennessee Tech tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.

The Herd regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Pye drove in another run. Harrell recorded her third hit of the game with a one-out single to right and then head coach Megan Smith brought in sophomore Chloe Lee to pinch run. Pye then hit a double to left-center that brought in the speedy Lee all the way from first.

In the bottom of the sixth, Harrell delivered four more insurance runs. Junior Katie Adams got on base first with a one-out single to right. Sophomore Rachel Pennington came in to run for Adams at first. Senior Blakely Burch kept the inning going with a single to center and then senior Haleigh Christopher entered for a pinch hit and reached on an infield error to load the bases. Two batters later, with two outs, Harrell drilled a grand slam out to center. The Herd led by five, 6-1.

Laney Jones got the start in the circle and pitched all seven innings for the win. She allowed just three hits and one run. She ended the game with her fifth strikeout.

Harrell ended the game 4-for-4 with four more RBI. She finished the day 6-of-7 at the plate with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBI.

Marshall takes the field on Sunday against Indiana State for one final game at the Chattanooga Challenge. First pitch from Frost Stadium is set for 10 a.m. The game will be broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul through one of the Listen Live links. The game will also be simulcast on Facebook Live.
