Spring 2020 Schedule Page

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team will be playing in the second annual Crew SC Spring College League. The Herd will play four spring exhibition contests, with three league matches, leading to the league finals in April.

"I'm looking forward to our spring schedule," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We have a great opening game here against Pitt, who are a very well coached team, so we're excited to welcome them here.

"After that we jump into Columbus Crew College Spring League play. We take on Dayton, Cincinnati, and NKU in the group stage, with the finals in Columbus on April 19th. We had a decent year in 2019, and we're looking to continue our development this spring. Part of that process is playing meaningful games, and with a trophy on the line, it gives our lads something extra to push themselves for."

Marshall is one of eight programs to participate this spring and will be playing in the South Division which consists of Cincinnati, Dayton and Northern Kentucky. Over in the North Division the teams are Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Ohio State and Tiffin.

The Herd begins its spring exhibition schedule against the Pitt Panthers in a match that is not a part of the SC Spring College League schedule. The Panthers travel to Huntington on March 7, with kickoff from Hoops Family Field and 1 p.m.

Marshall will then get into the league schedule taking on the other three teams in the South Division. The Herd travels to Dayton on March 14 (1 p.m.), then hosts Cincinnati on April 4 (1 p.m.) and then finishes at Northern Kentucky on April 10 (7 p.m.). The league finals, hosted in Columbus, Ohio, begin on April 19.

The Thundering Herd finished 2019 with an historic season winning its first Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament Titles, and then hosted an NCAA Tournament match as well as advancing to the third round.

Marshall finished the year with a 16-3-3 record and ranked No. 11 in the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Poll. The Herd defeated the Charlotte 49ers with a Golden Goal in double overtime to win the C-USA Tournament Championship and earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Marshall then received a first round bye as the 11th-ranked team in the country and hosted a second round matchup that brought WVU to Huntington. In front of a crowd of 2,126, the highest of any first or second NCAA Tournament match, the Herd beat WVU 2-1 to advance to the third round. Marshall's season came to an end at No. 6 Washington.

Several players for the Herd brought home numerous awards along the way as well and senior goalkeeper Paulo Pita was drafted by the Los Angeles FC with the 24th pick in the MLS Super Draft.
