HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball (11-13, 5-6 C-USA) closed out the game on an 11-0 to close a strong second-half of play and takedown the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 72-58, at the Cam Henderson Center on Thursday night.

"Well we played at best erratically at times," head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "We have these small periods where we play well, and we don't. It's getting towards the end of the year and I'm getting tired of it. I'm still proud of my kids. Obviously, we shot the ball better. You win by 13, you better put it in your pocket and move on. Our defense has always carried us (this year). If we win the next three, we might get to play in a nice pod. But we'll focus on Saturday."

Redshirt sophomore Iran Bennett led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. The forward made eight of his 14 shots from the field, while also rejecting a pair of shots.

Sophomore Taevion Kinsey followed up Bennett by pouring 16 points into the basket on a 6-for-11 night from the field. Kinsey added six assists, six rebounds and three steals to his stat line.

Jarrod West added another 14 points. The junior guard also had five rebounds and a game-high five steals in the win.

Freshman Marko Sarenac came off the bench in the win and scored 12 points while making four of his six attempts from behind-the-arc.

Redshirt junior Jannson Williams added nine boards for the Herd.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead to begin the ballgame. The two teams traded baskets until Marshall went on a 16-2 run across a 6:35 stretch to grab a 23-10 lead with 9:37 left in the first half.

After the Herd eventual led by as many as 14, Southern Miss answered with a 10-point run of its own and cut the Herd lead to four, 26-22. MU extended its lead back to 11, but USM closed the half on a 5-0 run as MU led 35-29 at the break.

The second half started with both squads trading runs, until Southern Miss used its second 10-0 run of the game to grab its first lead since the 16:36 mark in the first half at 47-44 with 13:25 left in the game.

Trailing by seven with just under 12 minutes remaining, the Thundering Herd wasn't ready to give up. Marshall buckled down and outscored Southern Miss 27-6, including closing the game on an 11-0 run in the final 5:58, to sail to the 14-point victory

NOTES
Marshall tied its team-high this season with 10 made three-pointers.

West's five steals in the win give him 190 for his career. He passed David Wade's 186 for second most in program history. He needs 19 takeaways to break Skip Henderson's program record of 208.

Bennett played in career-high 33 minutes.

Sarenac's four made threes are a career-high.

The Herd outrebounded the Golden Eagles 41-36 and had more second-chance points 21-14
