Marshall Tennis kicks off 2021 season at Kentucky

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women's tennis team kicks off the 2021 season on Thursday. The Herd faces the Kentucky Wildcats at 3:00 p.m. in Lexington, KY. Â

HAVE YOU HERD?
The Herd returned all seven members from last season in graduate students Madison Riley and Daniella Dankanych, senior Anna Smith, juniors Liz Stefancic and Madison Ballow, and sophomores Jutte Van Hansewyck and Kara Joseph.

Joining the Herd are freshmen Rieke Gillar and Gabrielle Clairotte. Gillar is from Lubbecke, Germany and Clairotte is from Beaune, France.

In addition to the two freshmen, junior Audrey Grigore rounds out the team. Grigore transferred from Whitman College and is native of Charleston, W.Va.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: KENTUCKY
Kentucky starts the season 4-0, collecting wins against East Tennessee State, Memphis and a doubleheader against Miami (OH) and Cincinnati.
Â
All four matches were in Lexington and three of the four were 7-0 sweeps. Cincinnati was the only team to score against the Wildcats even though it resulted in a 6-1 win for Kentucky.
Â
The Wildcats' roster consists of one graduate student, two fifth-year players, one redshirt senior, one redshirt junior, two sophomores and five freshmen.
SERIES HISTORY
Marshall is 2-6 against Kentucky, with the Wildcats winning the last match in 2019. Â

The Herd continues to play on the road facing Murray State on Friday, Feb. 5 at 3:00 p.m., in Murray, Ky.
