Senior center back has helped lead Herd in five-straight shutouts
DALLAS – Senior center back Nathan Dossantos, one of the leaders of the 3rd-ranked Marshall men's soccer team's defense, was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It is Dossantos' first weekly award of the 2021 season and the fourth of his career after being honored as a three-time C-USA Defensive Player of the Week in the spring of 2021.
"I'm very happy for Nate to be recognized," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "He definitely represents an entire team effort over the last few weeks to get back to being one of the best defensive teams in the country. We know that if we can shore up our defense, our ability in possession will take us where we need to go. Nate's done a terrific job this season, and I think if he keeps pushing and learning he has the potential to represent Canada at the national team level."
Dossantos has been one of the main factors in the Herd's recent streak of five-straight clean shutouts, which tied a team record. However, Marshall has established a program record for the longest opponent scoreless streak of 538 minutes and 12 seconds.
The Oakville, Ontario, Canada native helped hold Florida Atlantic to nine total shots with just one on goal in the Herd's most recent outing. It was the first time this season that the Owls had been shutout. Dossantos also had two shots in the match, and both were on target. His ability to win challenges, cut off opposing attackers and to contest shot attempts has helped Marshall maintain a stingy defense over the last two years. He also excels at helping out on the back line with the Herd's possession offense and working to break down the opposition.
This season, Dossantos leads the team in minutes played with 1,040, as he has played all but 10 minutes. Only getting pulled for a break at the end of the Herd's 6-1 victory at then No. 21 James Madison to open the season. Dossantos teams up with fellow center back Collin Mocyunas as well as Jan-Erik Leinhos and Gabriel Alves on the outside and then keeper Oliver Semmle to form a very formidable defense. The last goal that Marshall allowed was in the 42nd minute against then No. 4 WVU, back on Sept. 17.
Dossantos was named First Team All-C-USA this past season and was selected as the 2021 Preseason C-USA Defensive Player of the Year. He has appeared in every match since joining Marshall before the 2020-21 season.
Marshall is back home at Hoops Family Field on Saturday, Oct. 16 against the UAB Blazers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
