No. 3 Men’s Soccer Set to Host UAB

Kickoff from Hoops Family Field scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 3rd-ranked Marshall men's soccer team is back at Hoops Family Field in Conference USA action against the UAB Blazers. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.
 
The Thundering Herd comes in at 7-1-3 overall and 2-0-2 in C-USA. The Blazers enter at 2-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league play. Marshall currently ranks second in the conference standings with eight points. Coastal Carolina is first with 10 and has played two more league matches than the Herd.

Series History: 19 all-time meetings – UAB leads 11-6-2, Marshall is 3-0-1 against UAB under head coach Chris Grassie.
Last Meeting: April 10, 2021 in Birmingham – Marshall won 1-0, Jamil Roberts scored the game-winner in the 38th minute. Herd defense did not allow a single shot on goal.
 
Marshall's defense has been playing very well over the last few weeks, tying a program record with five-straight clean sheets. The Herd has not allowed a goal since the 42nd minute against then No. 4 WVU back on Sept. 17, a total of 538 minutes and 12 seconds which is a team record.
 
With the play of the defense, senior center back Nathan Dossantos was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Dossantos has helped lead the way while working alongside some great players. Fellow center back Collin Mocyunas, right back Jan-Erik Leinhos, left back Gabriel Alves and goalkeeper Oliver Semmle are all operating at the top of their game. Semmle is now second in program history with 16 career clean sheets.
 
On offense, Marshall has been finding the back of the net at a rate of 2.36 goals per game good for tops in the league and 18th in the NCAA. The Herd is coming off a three-goal game on the road at Florida Atlantic. Senior Vitor Dias, redshirt junior Milo Yosef and graduate student Pedro Dolabella all scored. Dolabella leads the team with seven goals, tying his career-high from 2019, and 19 points. He is tied with Dias for second on the squad in assists with five. Senior Vinicius Fernandes leads the Herd in helpers with seven, is tied with Dias for second in goals with five, and is second on the team in total points with 17. Dias with his five goals and five assists is third in points with 15.
 
Dolabella and Yosef have been climbing up the all-time career charts in goals scored. Dolabella is sixth in Marshall history with 20 while Yosef is tied for eighth with 18. Dolabella is also tied for sixth in career assists with 15 and is seventh with 55 total points. Yosef is tied for 11th in total points with 46.
 
Along with scoring offense, Marshall ranks in the top 20 in the NCAA in assists per game (4th – 2.73), shot accuracy (8th - .520), total assists (11th – 30), points per game (11th – 7.45), shutout percentage (15th - .545), total points (16th – 82), and goal differential (18th – 16).
 
Following the match against the Blazers, the Herd has another home match against the Wright State Raiders on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
 
The Opponent
The Blazers have victories over Ohio State and Gardner-Webb this season but are in search of its first league win. UAB is also looking to get off a four-match losing skid that has seen losses to No. 23 FIU (2-1), Georgia State (3-1), No. 10 Kentucky (3-1) and South Carolina (2-0).
 
The Blazers have been outscored 24-14 this season. UAB has been outshot 140-92 and 66-40 on target. Nathaniel St. Louis leads the team with five goals and 11 total points. Brooks Rice is next with three goals, while Curtis DeLeon and Nicolai Placzek have two each. Teodor Thorvaldsen is the leader in assists with four. He assisted on three of UAB's five goals in the win over Gardner-Webb.
 
Seth Torman and Trevor Jackson have been splitting time in the net. Torman has made six starts and logged just over 515 minutes. He has allowed 17 goals, has a 2.97 goals against average, made 26 saves and has a .605 save percentage to go along with a 1-5 record. Jackson has made four starts but has appeared in six matches with 404 minutes. He has allowed seven goals, sports a 1.56 goals against average, made 17 saves and has a .708 save percentage with a 1-3 record.
 
Following the match in Huntington, UAB has four matches remaining in the regular season and all against C-USA opponents. The Blazers return to Birmingham for a match with Florida Atlantic on Oct. 23.
