Box Score
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Marshall University women's soccer team (3-11-2, 0-7-1 C-USA) fell in its final game of the season, 3-2, to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (9-7-1, 5-3-0 C-USA) on Thursday night in Murfreesboro.
"It's hard to put into words the disappointment I have for our players," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the match. "They've bounced back after every tough loss with good performances. Tonight was no different. They fought their way back into it in the last 10 minutes and were very unfortunate to not be given the opportunity to tie it up. They've grown together as a group and they've shown the ability to be in games. The next step is to go and win games. We've got talent, we've got fight, and I see a bright future ahead."
Freshman goalkeeper Mira Pastoft was tested early as she made her first save 30 seconds into the match. The Blue Raiders kept up the pressure and Peyton DePriest scored in the third minute as MU trailed 1-0.
Senior midfielder Kat Gonzalez nearly answered for the Herd seeing a shot saved by MT goalkeeper Hannah Suder in the seventh minute and hitting the woodwork at the 13:20 mark. However, in the 19th minute, Gonzalez cut in from the left side, fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and hit the back of the net to tie the match 1-1. It was her fifth goal of the season, tied for the team lead.
Gonzalez continued to apply pressure on the Blue Raider defense as she had a shot go high two minutes after the goal and freshman midfielder Cassidy Bell placed a shot on goal, but Suder made the save at 20:58.
Pastoft made a key save with just under three minutes remaining in the half, but just as it seemed the two sides would go into the break tied, Kirstine Lykke scored with two seconds left in the opening period as Marshall trailed 2-1.
Sophomore defender Abi Hugh recorded the first shot of the second half in the 49th minute, but Suder was there to make the save.
In the 55th minute, Lykke tallied a brace to put MT up 3-1.
However, Pastoft rebounded with saves at 58:53 and 66:37. Freshman forward Alyssa Hardin fired the ball at Suder, who made the save in the 63rd minute.
Pastoft stood tall in goal making her fifth save of the match in the 71st minute and her sixth in the 77th to keep the deficit at two.
Junior forward Morgan White put a shot on target at 79:40, but Suder made the save. However, just over three minutes later, White found paydirt and cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. It was her third goal of the season.
MU didn't have a shot the rest of the way as the match ended 3-2 in favor of Middle Tennessee.
