BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 5th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team earned its fifth-straight clean sheet to tie a program record with a 3-0 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls Saturday night. It was the first time this season that the Owls were held scoreless.
Marshall has not allowed a goal in 538 minutes and 12 seconds. The last goal conceded by the Herd came in the 42nd minute against No. 4 West Virginia. The five-straight matches ties the program record that was set back in 2012 as that squad held its streak during the first five matches of the year. However, the 2021 Thundering Herd has set a new team record for scoreless minutes as the 2012 team went 493 minutes and 34 seconds.
The Herd improves to 7-1-3 overall and 2-0-2 in Conference USA play. The Owls drop to 6-2-2 overall and 1-1-2 in league action.
"Very solid performance from us tonight," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We were able to move the ball well in the first half and find gaps, and score goals. (Head coach) Joey (Worthen) has done an amazing job with FAU, bringing them to where they are now, and that was a difficult challenge in the league. That's the first time any of us have won down at FAU since I got here, so I'm very happy with that achievement!"
The Herd and the Owls have been swapping wins over the past four seasons since coach Grassie took over, with the home team winning. Marshall won in 2018 and the spring of 2021 in Huntington, and the Owls were victorious in 2017 and 2019 down in Boca Raton. This was the first time in the last five meetings that the road team came out with the win.
Marshall got rolling offensively right from the start with 10 total shots in the first half with five on target. Senior Vitor Dias had the first attempt on goal with a header in the sixth minute that was saved by Neil Strauber, the Owls' keeper. In the 14th minute, senior Nathan Dossantos fired a shot that was saved again.
However, in the 15th minute Marshall's constant pressure broke through. Sophomore Gabriel Alves sprinted up the near sideline and sent a pass to junior Joao Souza in the 18-yard box. Souza immediately made a centering pass to Dias who knocked it through for the score.
For Dias it was his fifth goal of the season and 14th of his career. Alves and Souza were both credited with the assist. For Alves it was his first helper of the year and Souza's second. But Souza was not done for the night.
Marshall kept its foot on the gas as graduate student Pedro Dolabella had a shot attempt saved in the 21st minute. Then in the 23rd minute, Dolabella and senior Vinicius Fernandes teamed up with some great passing to redshirt junior Milo Yosef for the score. Yosef netted his second goal of the season and 18th of his career, putting him into a tie for eighth all-time in program history. Dolabella tallied his fifth assist of the year and 15th of his career, tying him for sixth all-time at Marshall. Fernandes earned his team-leading seventh assist of the season, a career-high.
The Herd's final shot on goal in the first half came in the 43rd minute as senior Ibrahima Diop had an opportunity, but Strauber was there for the save.
Florida Atlantic took five shots in the first half with zero on target. Marshall led 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Owls came out trying to make the adjustment to put out more offensive pressure. Florida Atlantic outshot the Herd 4-2 in the second half, however the Owls managed just one shot on goal.
Marshall tacked on its third score of the night in the 56th minute. Souza had a chance with a break-away and took a shot from the near side that Strauber deflected. Unfortunately for Florida Atlantic, Dolabella was charging in and knocked the rebound just over the outstretched Strauber on the ground. Souza with the initial shot, tallied his second assist of the night, a personal single-match career-best, and his third of the season.
Dolabella leads the team with seven goals this year, tying his career-high from 2019. He has scored four goals in the last three matches and has tallied at least one point in 9-of-11 contests as well as at least two points six times. The Brasilia, Brazil native scored the 20th goal of his career, moving him ahead of former teammate Jamil Roberts to take sixth place all-time in team history.
Florida Atlantic had its best chance to end the scoring drought in the 72nd minute when Zach Hassell tried beat senior Oliver Semmle to the low left corner. Semmle made the diving stop for his only save of the night and kept the shutout alive.
The Owls had one last attempt with less than 15 seconds remaining with a corner kick, but the Herd's defense was there to clear the attempt out of the box as the final seconds rolled off the clock.
Semmle earned his fifth clean sheet of the season and 16th of his career. The senior moves passed Taly Goode (1996-00) for sole possession of second place all-time in Marshall history. Daniel Withrow (2009-12) who was the Herd's keeper the last time the team had five-straight shutouts, is first all-time with 21.5 career clean sheets.
Marshall returns to Hoops Family Field for another Conference USA match, as the UAB Blazers visit Huntington on Saturday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
