Series History: 28 all-time meetings – Marshall leads 16-12
Last Meeting: Dec. 6, 2020 in Huntington – Marshall won 69-58, Savannah Wheeler had 25 points.
Marshall's offense started rolling from the opening tip in the win over Bluefield State. It was the first time that Marshall scored at least 20 points in all four quarters since an 87-42 win over FIU on March 7, 2019. It was the first time that the Herd hit the century mark since a 111-38 decision over Kentucky Christian on Dec. 18, 2017. Tuesday was also the first time that Marshall had six players in double-digits since Dec. 20, 2016, a 136-62 victory over Maine Fort Kent. Marshall's defense forced 30 turnovers against Big Blue, the first time that the Herd forced 30 or more since Nov. 5, 2019 in an 89-40 win over Kentucky Christian.
Senior transfers Aaliyah Dunham (Xavier) and Brianah Ferby (Austin Peay) had great Marshall debuts. Dunham, also back in her home state, put up 17 points, seven assists and six steals. Ferby scored 13 points, had four rebounds and two assists.
The Herd shot 56.8-percent from the floor in the win and scored 58 points in the paint.
Marshall has a great mix of returners and newcomers to be able to give fifth-year head coach Tony Kemper a deep bench. Experienced players back for 2021-22 are graduate Kennedi Colclough, juniors Lorelei Roper and Kia Sivils, sophomores Savannah Wheeler and Alexis Johnson, as well as freshmen CC Mays and Samantha LaFon who put in plenty of minutes during the now COVID season of 2020-21. Fellow returning freshmen Ksenija Mitric and Sarah Liberatore also had some time on the floor. Aarionna Redman and Christiana McLean are healthy for the first time in their careers and add to the depth.
Dunham and Ferby bring experience to the Herd lineup. Freshman Sofia Llanos is the third newcomer.
Wheeler with her 14 points in the opener against Bluefield State now has 740 points in her career. She has tallied 10 or more points in 40-of-50 games in her career.
Marshall will be back in the Cam Henderson Center on Friday, Nov. 19 against Morehead State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
The Opponent
Radford will have its home-opener against the Herd. The Highlanders went on the road to Pittsburgh and fell by 19 points. Radford trailed 37-22 at the half, and then got its offense in better rhythm in the second half with 41 points including 23 in the fourth quarter. The Highlanders shot 54.6-percent from the floor, 4-of-6 from three and 7-of-8 from the line in the fourth. The Panthers outrebounded Radford 58-23.
Ashley Tudor led the way offensively with 12 points off the bench as she was 8-of-8 from the line. Kyanna Morgan scored 11 points, also coming off the bench. Rachel LaLonde was the only starter in double-figures with 10.
Radford is looking to build off a 9-11 record last season with several contests that were canceled due to COVID issues. Head coach Mike McGuire is entering his ninth season at the helm and has 142 wins. He led the Highlanders to the NCAA Tournament in 2019 after capturing the Big South Tournament Championship and finished with a 26-7 overall record.
Following the game against Marshall, Radford stays home for a contest against Lenoir-Rhyne (Nov. 19) before going back on the road to Morgantown to take on West Virginia.
