HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The defending National Champions Marshall men's soccer team will be the No. 14 overall seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, the selection committee announced on Monday.
The Thundering Herd found out its path in the NCAA Tournament during a selection show watch party that also included the players and coaches receiving their 2020 College Cup National Championship rings
The Herd will host a second-round match on Sunday, Nov. 21 with first touch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hoops Family Field. Marshall awaits the winner of Providence (10-4-4) and Marist (12-6-3).
Soccer season ticket holders have until Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 4 p.m. to renew. Season ticket holders can click HERE to log in and renew. All remaining tickets will go on sale on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 9 a.m. Tickets can be purchased on herdzone.com.
"It was nice to be seeded," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I think last week we were thinking we were competing for a top four seed and then we had a bad week, and now we are just lucky to be seeded.
"Happy to be in the tournament. Happy to have at least one game here with these fans so we get to celebrate with them and perform and entertain the great fans that have helped us all the way through. At this point, we know that we can beat anybody. With Providence and Marist, either one of those matchups will be tough. So, we are going to have to focus this week and take it step by step. Survive and advance."
The Thundering Herd enter the tournament with an overall record of 11-3-3, and this season will be the third-straight berth in the NCAA Tournament for Marshall. The Herd earned the No. 2 seed in the Conference USA Tournament and then lost to Florida Atlantic in the semifinal round. Marshall has won double-digit contests for the third-consecutive season with a record of 40-8-9 over that span.
The Herd is one of four teams from Conference USA to earn a spot in the NCAA postseason. League champion Kentucky earned the No. 9 seed while the FIU Panthers picked up the No. 13 seed. Both teams received a first round bye and will host a second-round match. Kentucky awaits the winner of Akron and Santa Clara while FIU will take on the winner of Wake Forest and Mercer. Charlotte also earned an at-large bid and will host a first round match against Georgia State. The winner will travel to No. 3 seed Georgetown in the second round.
Providence will host the match against Marist on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. The Friars finished the regular season ranked No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches/NCAA poll and lost 2-1 in overtime to Georgetown in the Big East Championship on Sunday. The Marist Red Foxes earned an automatic bid after winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championship over Rider on Sunday. The match ended tied at 2-2 and went to penalty kicks, where Marist came out on top 5-3.
