No. 14 seed Men’s Soccer Set for Second Round versus Providence

First ever meeting between the two programs
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team as the No. 14 seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, welcomes the Providence Friars for a second round match. First touch is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. from Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd enters the match with an overall record of 11-3-3. The Friars come in at 11-4-4. The winner will take on the winner of the No. 3 seed Georgetown Hoyas and Georgia State Panthers, which kicks off Sunday at 11 a.m.

Series History: First ever meeting
Marshall enters the postseason as the No. 4 team in the country in the final regular season poll, that came out prior to the Conference USA Tournament. The defending National Champions earned a No. 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament, a first-round bye, and then the chance to host at least a second round meeting. This will be the first ever meeting between the Herd and the Friars.
Marshall is on a two-match losing skid, its first since 2018, falling at No. 19 FIU to end the regular season and then to Florida Atlantic in the semifinal round of the C-USA Tournament. The Herd was one of four teams from C-USA to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky received the automatic bid as the tournament champions followed by FIU, Marshall and Charlotte with at-large bids. UK and FIU also earned a seed and a first-round bye. The 49ers hosted a first-round match and lost 1-0 to Georgia State on Thursday. Kentucky as the No. 9 seed plays Santa Clara, and FIU as the No. 13 seed plays Wake Forest.
Despite the past two losses, Marshall still holds a 36-18 scoring advantage over its opponents this season. The Herd has had 13 different players score a goal including seven net two or more. Graduate student, and Conference USA Player of the Year, Pedro Dolabella leads the team with 10 goals and 26 total points. The others with multiple goals this season are senior Vinicius Fernandes (six), senior Vitor Dias (five), redshirt junior Milo Yosef (three), senior Ibrahima Diop (two), junior Max Schneider (two), and freshman Paulo Lino (two). Marshall is 18th in the NCAA in scoring offense at 2.12 goals per game.
Fernandes is the team leader in assists with eight helpers. He also scored the Herd's lone goal in the loss to Florida Atlantic. Yosef is next with seven assists. Dolabella has six assists and Dias has five. Marshall has totaled 39 assists on 36 goals and rank 15th in the nation in assists per game with 2.29. Nine players have tallied at least two assists.
Senior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle has been the mainstay in the net, playing just over 1,500 minutes and has eight clean sheets out of his 10 wins. He has a 1.07 goals against average and a .719 save percentage. Semmle and the defense went through a team record-breaking stretch earlier this season with seven-straight shutouts and going over 760 minutes without conceding a goal. Senior center back Nathan Dossantos has been the leader on the back line and was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year.
The Herd is in the NCAA Postseason for the third-straight time and holds a 6-1 all-time record. Marshall went 1-1 in its first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2019. The Herd earned the No. 11 seed as Conference USA champions, and hosted a second round match. Marshall defeated WVU, 2-1, at Hoops Family Field in front of the largest crowd for any first or second round match that year in the postseason of 2,126. The Herd then fell in the third round at No. 6 Washington.
Marshall put together its historic 5-0 run through the postseason in the spring of 2021 to capture its first College Cup National Title. The Herd began with a 2-1, overtime win against No. 23 Fordham as Yosef scored both goals, with the game-winner coming in the 97th minute. The magical ride continued in the third round as Marshall took down the No. 1 seed Clemson Tigers in a penalty kick shootout. Dias hit the winner after Semmle made a save to keep the shootout tied at 6-6. Dias drilled a laser to the far side to end the match and advance to the Elite 8. From there is a defensive display for the Herd with three-straight shutouts, and three-straight game-winners from Jamil Roberts.
Marshall took down the defending nationals champs, No. 8 Georgetown, 1-0 as Roberts scored in the 70th minute. The defense then stymied No. 16 North Carolina in the Final Four as Semmle finished with five saves, and Roberts scored the lone goal of the match in the 60th minute, also the only shot on goal of the game for the Herd. A total team effort was in full force on national TV as Marshall took down eight-time national champion, No. 3 Indiana, 1-0 in the title match. The contest went to overtime and Roberts did it again in the 98th minute.
The Opponent
Providence is ranked No. 18 in the final regular season poll, but enter the NCAA postseason unseeded. The Friars lost 2-1 in overtime to Georgetown in the Big East Tournament Championship. The Friars hosted its first round match against the Marist Red Foxes and came away with a 2-0 victory Thursday night. Christopher Roman scored in the 40th minute and Armaan Wilson put the capper on the win with a goal in the 67th minute.
Providence outshot Marist 18-6 overall and 8-1 on goal.
The Friars have two wins this season over ranked opponents. Providence opened the year with a 3-0 win over No. 23 Fordham and then defeated No. 1 Georgetown, 3-0, at home back on Oct. 13. As a team, Providence has 41 assists. Fourteen players have also tallied at least one helper.
Lukas Burns has played all but 26 minutes this season in net for the Friars, logging almost 1,800 for the year. He has allowed just 18 goals and sports a 0.91 goals against average. Burns has tallied 55 saves and has a .753 save percentage. He has seven clean sheets out of his 11 victories.
