HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team took down the FIU Panthers in four sets Friday night (25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15) with a great defensive effort. The teams meet again on Saturday at 12 p.m., for Senior Day and the regular season finale.
Â
The Thundering Herd improved to 9-15 and 5-6 in Conference USA. The Panthers fall to 8-12 and also 5-6 in league action. Marshall needs to win on Saturday to earn a spot in the C-USA Tournament. The Herd will be honoring five seniors prior to the match in Sydney Lostumo, Zoie Holley, Sarah Schank, Destiny Leon and Ciara DeBell. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
Â
"This was a full team win tonight," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We were able to use our off week and really change up our entire lineup. Being able to now incorporate Brynn Brown, who executed a double-double tonight, was necessary for the win. Destiny (Leon) stepped up with nine blocks and nine kills. We weren't as clean as we needed to be, but we were able to be balanced and not just rely on one person. We have to get after it tomorrow and we're excited to highlight our seniors for their last home match."
Â
Marshall's defense led the way against one of the best blocking teams in C-USA. The Herd blocked a total of 35 attack attempts at the net and ended the night with 12 total team blocks as FIU was able to keep some points alive. The Herd also totaled 66 digs in the match. Marshall held FIU to hitting just .083 (44 kills, 31 errors, 156 attempts), its third-lowest percentage of the season.
Â
Destiny Leon put up a strong performance with nine blocks, tying her season-high. Junior Essence Clerkley and Ciara DeBell were next with four each. Junior Lydia Montague had three with senior Macy McElhaney and sophomore Anna Calcagno adding two each. Sarah Schank led the Herd in digs with 18 while freshman Brynn Brown recorded 13, including one great diving effort in the fourth set that kept the point alive, and DeBell added 12.
Â
Brown recorded her second career double-double and her first since Sept. 4 against Ball State, adding a career-best 18 assists to go along with her 13 digs. DeBell also had a double-double, her 12th of the season and 39th of her great career, leading the team in kills with 12.
Â
McElhaney was next with 11 kills. Leon finished with nine kills and Calcagno had seven. Montague and Clerkley had three kills each with redshirt sophomore Olivia Fogo adding two. Schank even got in on the offensive side with one kill.
Â
Sydney Lostumo led in assists with 26 and also finished with four aces.
Â

FIU started off well at the net with two blocks for the first two points and began with a 3-0 lead. Marshall came right back and took the lead at 5-4 on a block assist from Leon and DeBell. The teams traded points back-and-forth until the Herd stepped back out in front for the last time at 12-11 on an ace from Lostumo. The Panthers kept it close as Marshall led by no more than four points, but still maintained the lead through the rest of the period. Marshall started to come alive on defense as the Herd blocked nine attack attempts, but were credited with just two team blocks as the Panthers kept many of the block attempts off the floor and the point alive.
