Libero has 1,162 digs in collegiate career
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall volleyball head coach Ari Aganus announced the addition of Kaitlyn Gehler, a transfer from Wyoming, to the Herd for the 2022 season.
Â
"I am so excited to welcome Kaitlyn to our family," coach Aganus said. "She brings a wealth of experience to our roster and tough mentality that we've been looking for. She'll be a great addition for our program in the classroom as well as on the court."Â
Â
Gehler has four seasons of collegiate experience behind her with 363 sets played, 1,162 digs, 195 assists and 51 aces. She has recorded double-digit digs 56 times in her career.
Â
"I chose Marshall because of the family atmosphere of the town, program and school," Gehler said. "With being so far from Wisconsin, I wanted to make sure I could find a new place that felt like home. I believe surrounding myself with the supportive people this program has is going to set me up for success in the non-volleyball world, as well as help me reach my full potential as an athlete."
Â
The Waterloo, Wisc., native played libero for the Cowgirls over the past two seasons. In the 2021 season, she played in 96 sets and finished third on the team with 177 digs. Gehler added 35 assists, four aces and three kills. Gehler tallied 10 or more digs in eight matches this fall with a season high of 13 in three matches. She earned Academic All-Conference honors in 2021 as a Spanish major.
Â
In the shortened 2020-21 season, Gehler played in all 14 matches and 51 sets on her way to leading Wyoming with 152 digs, an average of 2.98 per set. She also totaled seven aces and 22 assists. Gehler recorded double-digit digs eight times. She rang up 33 in two matches against Boise State, including a season-best 18 digs in the second match. Gehler totaled 29 in two matches versus New Mexico and added two aces in the second meeting. She was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 15 for her efforts against New Mexico.
Â
Gehler began her collegiate career playing two years at Memphis. With the Tigers, Gehler appeared in 58 matches and 216 sets. She recorded 833 digs, an average of 3.86 per set, and added 138 assists and 40 aces. Gehler had 449 digs as a sophomore in 2019, with 10 or more in 22 matches and a season-high of 30 in a five-set win over Wichita State. She added six assists in the victory as well. Gehler tallied 384 total digs with double-digits 18 times as a freshman in 2018 with a career-high 33 in a win against East Carolina. She was named to the 2018-19 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and was on the Dean's List as well as the Tiger 3.0 Club each semester boasting a 4.0 GPA.
