Full Schedule
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Head coach Matt Grobe announced the Marshall men's golf 2021 spring schedule Wednesday. The Thundering Herd is set to compete in six regular season tournaments before the Conference USA Championships.
"I am very excited about our spring schedule," coach Grobe said. "It will have been about a year since we have been able to compete when we finally get to start our season. We are really looking forward to getting on the road and competing again. It is a very competitive schedule and we will play against some great competition."
The Herd will finally get back on the links beginning March 4-6 at the Sea Palms Invitational, hosted by Western Carolina, at the Sea Palms Resort located at St. Simons Island, Ga. It will have been almost a full calendar year for Marshall as the last time the team was on the course was at Pinehurst, back on March 6-8, 2020.
Following the trip down to St. Simons Island, the Herd travels to the Pinehurst Intercollegiate (March 12-14), the Furman Intercollegiate (March 26-28), the Irish Creek Intercollegiate (April 2-3), the Mountaineer Intercollegiate (April 12-13) and the Wright State Invitational (April 18-19).
Marshall then moves on to the Conference USA Championships, April 26-29, at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
Coach Grobe's roster will feature plenty of competition with nine returners and five freshmen. The returners for the Herd this season are redshirt seniors Matt Hoffman, Cameron Root and Will Straub, seniors Noah Mullens and Brad Plaziak, juniors Kyle Mitchell and Isaac Prine, and sophomores Christian Boyd and Tyler Jones. The freshman class consists of Joseph Kalaskey, Layne Lambert, Brett Montgomery, Andrew Wyss and Bennett Zeitner.
The Herd's best finish as a team this past season came at the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate, coming in fourth out of 11 teams.
Jones led the Herd last season with a 74.29 stroke average playing in all seven tournaments (21 rounds). His top finish was tied for ninth at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational (Sept. 9-10), also his very first collegiate action. That same tournament, Root had the best round of the year for Marshall with a 4-under 67, in the second round.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be the first time since 1971 that Marshall has not hosted the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, which usually takes place in early September.
