HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team is ready to step on the pitch for the first time in 440 days on Saturday. The Thundering Herd will kickoff the 2021 Spring season against the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots at 1 p.m., at Hoops Family Field.

Marshall is coming off its best season in program history with a record of 16-3-3, the Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament Championships, first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, a win over WVU (2-1) in the second round, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, and a final ranking of No. 11 in the country. Head coach Chris Grassie turned the program around in just three years and now looks to defend the C-USA Title and advance further in the post season.
The Herd will have some key pieces on defense to replace with the 2019 graduations of goalkeeper Paulo Pita and defenders Illal Osmanu and Carlos Diaz-Salcedo. On offense, Marshall returns 40 of its 45 goals scored from a year ago. Redshirt sophomore, and 2019 United Soccer Coaches All-American, Milo Yosef scored 12 goals in 2019 and was named the 2021 Spring C-USA Preseason Player of the Year. Senior Jamil Roberts returns after netting career-highs of eight goals and leading the team with 10 assists. Roberts was taken in the third round of the 2021 MLS Super Draft but has opted to stay and play his senior season with the Herd and then join his new team, Sporting Kansas City, later in the year.
Looking to take over in the net for Marshall are redshirt junior Kyle Winquist, junior Oliver Semmle, redshirt freshman Gabe Sitler, and freshmen Frank Walkington and Nicholas Eskins. Winquist has played in the past for the Herd in 2017. Sitler redshirted the 2019 season with Marshall, but starred at Monteverde Academy in his prep career. Semmle had a successful two-year run at the junior college level. The native of Germany led Monroe College (Bronx, N.Y.) in 2019 with a 9-0 record, a save percentage of .926 and a 0.22 goals against average. Walkington comes to Marshall from Auckland, New Zealand and Eskins is from right down the road in Hurricane, W.Va.
Coach Grassie has brought in a talented mix of freshmen as well as transfers to help keep Marshall moving forward.
The Opponent
Ohio Valley plays in Division II in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The match will count as an exhibition for the Fighting Scots, but will be a regular season match for Marshall. Ohio Valley finished 2019 with a 13-6-2 record and advanced to the second round of the Division II NCAA Tournament.
The Fighting Scots return 26 of its 40 goals scored in 2019, with its second (Hugo Kadima, seven goals) and third-leading goal scorers (Nicolas Rodriguez, six goals) being the main players to replace. Sophomore David Bercedo led the team with eight goals as a freshman. Both players who spent time in the net in 2019 are back. Junior Stevens Velez played nearly 1,200 minutes with a goals against average of 1.06 and a save percentage of .736. Senior Sanitago Rojas played over 760 minutes with a 1.30 goals against average and a .725 save percentage.
