Herd begins season at Winthrop Kickoff Tournament, Feb. 19-21
2021 Marshall Softball Schedule
Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball head coach Megan Smith Lyon announced the Thundering Herd's 2021 schedule on Friday. The Herd begins its season at the Winthrop Kickoff Tournament, Feb. 19-21.
Â
Marshall finished the 2020 season with a record of 18-7, and led the nation in home runs per game with 1.92. The Herd unfortunately never made it to Conference USA action as the season was canceled just before the team was set to play the FIU Panthers at home for its league-opener.
Â
In 2021, Marshall opens the season with two tournaments on the road, first at Winthrop and then the Chanticleer Showdown (Feb. 26-28) at Coastal Carolina.
Â
In the opener at Winthrop, along with playing against the Eagles, the other opponents for the Herd will be Furman, Bowling Green and Stony Brook. At Coastal Carolina, Marshall will play against the host Chanticleers, as well as Charleston Southern and Lipscomb.
Â
The Herd then comes to Dot Hicks Field for the home-opener, hosting the Thundering Herd Round Robin with Bowling Green and Valparaiso making the trip to Huntington, March 4-7. Marshall then travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., for a three-game series with the Mocs (March 20-21) and then return home for a three-game series versus Bellarmine (March 27-28).
Â
Attendance rules for Marshall home games will be forthcoming.
Â
The Herd begins Conference USA play in April. This season to help with reducing travel, the league's teams will play just the schools in its own division. Each conference series will be four games played over three days, Friday through Sunday. There will be one game Friday, a doubleheader Saturday, and one game Sunday. Marshall, being in the East Division, will take on WKU (April 2-4) at home, travel to Middle Tennessee (April 9-11), home against Florida Atlantic (April 16-18), and then on the road at FIU (April 23-25) and at Charlotte (May 7-9).
Â
The conference tournament is set to be hosted by WKU in Bowling Green, Ky., May 12-15.
Â
Coach Smith Lyon returns a talented squad for the 2021 season. Virtually the entire starting lineup from 2020 is back with some great additions. Super seniors Blakely Burch and Sierra Huerta are back for another season along with fellow starters Aly Harrell, Mya Stevenson, Armani Brown, Saige Pye, Rachel Rousseau, Katie Adams, and Grace Chelemen. Other experienced returners to the Herd are Chloe Lee, Rachel Pennington, Caitlin Myers and Carson Lyon. In the circle Marshall returns Laney Jones, Ashley Blessin, Megan Stauffer and Delaney Heaberlin.
Â
Newcomers to the Herd for the 2021 season include five freshmen and six transfers. The freshman class consists of pitcher Brianna McCown, catcher Kat Sackett, infielder Amaya Lee, and outfielders Kay Kay Kenney and Paige Halliwill. The transfers are pitchers Cailey Joyce (La Salle University) and Madi Garay (University of Louisiana), infielders Taylor Robinson (Gulf Coast State College), Camryn Michallas (Gulf Coast State College), and Madison Whitaker (Wright State), and outfielder Ellie Boteler (Detroit Mercy).
