MIAMI, Fla. – The Marshall volleyball team was hitting on all cylinders Monday to earn a consecutive sweep, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-16), over the FIU Panthers. Three players for the Thundering Herd finished with hitting percentages over .400, while the Herd defense held FIU to a .029 attack percentage.

Marshall improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in Conference USA play. The Panthers fall to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in league action.

"It's very exciting to be part of the execution that took place yesterday and today," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "The resilience this team has been showing is impressive and day by day we continue to grow as a unit. We were able to spread the ball and lean on each of our hitters, and they showed up and did their job. We have a defensive unit lead by Sarah Schank who continues to keep us in system and makes Sydney's (Lostumo) job easier and allows her to shine."

Junior Macy McElhaney (.462), redshirt senior Ciara Debell (.417) and senior Destiny Leon (.417) all finished with attack percentages over .400 as the Herd hit .301 as a team. Marshall hit .323 in the first set and .381 in the third. Debell led the team with 11 kills, her 52nd career match in double-figures, and added six digs and one block. Leon was second with eight kills and tallied four total blocks. Leon's consecutive matches streak with at least one block is up to 34, and she has totaled at least two in every match this season.

McElhaney had seven kills and just one error in 13 attacks. The junior also recorded two service aces and three blocks. Redshirt freshman Olivia Fogo finished with five kills and two blocks, while freshman Anna Calcagno tallied four kills and seven digs.

Senior setter Sydney Lostumo finished with 31 assists, and has tallied at least 30 in every match this season. Lostumo added five digs and three aces. Junior libero Sarah Schank led the team with 12 digs and had a career-high four aces. The Herd ended the match with 10 service aces. Redshirt sophomore Hayler Delor tallied three digs.

Marshall's defense totaled seven blocks in the match and forced 26 FIU attack errors.

The Herd dominated from the beginning. The first featured three ties, but no lead changes, as the last time FIU tied the set was at 3-3. Marshall used two runs of 3-0 and 4-0 to build out a lead of six, 12-6. Debell's third kill of the set put the Herd up 18-14 and forced FIU to call a timeout. Following the break, Marshall finished the set on a 9-1 run as Debell added three more kills, and the Herd won 25-15.

In the second set, Marshall led early 3-0 before the Panthers rallied and eventually took its first lead of the day at 9-8. However, that was short-lived as the Herd went on a 3-0 run and then a 4-0 run to lead 15-10. FIU pulled back within two at 17-15 before a 5-0 run from Marshall put the Herd back up by seven, 22-15, with the final two points of the run coming on back-to-back blocks by Fogo and McElhaney. Debell ended the second set with another kill and put Marshall on top, 2-0, looking for another sweep.

FIU took charge at the beginning of the third set taking a 3-1 lead. Again, the advantage did not last long as the Herd took a 4-0 run fueled by two more blocks, to lead 5-3. Marshall never looked back. The Herd used a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to take command. The Panthers did rally to bring the score two within two, again, at 17-15. However, FIU managed to score just one more point as the Herd ran away with an 8-1 run to finish the set and the match.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Feb. 28 and March 1 to take on No. 20 WKU. Both matches are set for 1 p.m. first serve.
