McVicker recorded seven saves for Marshall
Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The Marshall University women's soccer team (1-1) fell to the Dayton Flyers (3-1), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Dayton.
"We had to defend for large portions of the game, but we did that very well," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the contest. "I'm proud of how many times our defenders put their bodies on the line. That's a sign we are heading into the right direction. Courtney (McVicker) in goal was fantastic and to have that security behind us is fantastic. We had a couple of really big chances, but you have to give credit to the Dayton players for making a couple of great blocks to deny us."
Both teams had trouble getting offense going in the first 10 minutes of the contest until Marshall goalkeeper Courtney McVicker made a save on a shot by UD's Madison Wilson in the 12th minute and made another on another attempt by Kara Camarco in the 28th minute.
The Herd's Kat Gonzalez fired an attempt over the crossbar in the 13th minute with the squad's first shot on goal coming from Abi Hugh in 32nd minute, but it was saved by Dayton keeper Carly Becker.
The Flyers had three more shot attempts the rest of half, but they were all off target as the game was 0-0 at halftime.
UD had two shots go off target in the first two minutes of the second half. Then in the 56th minute McVicker stopped three shots in a 50 second span to keep game scoreless.
Dayton fired four shots off target in the next eight minutes of action, before McVicker made her fifth save of the game in the 65th minute.
Camarco put a shot past McVicker in the 74th minute as the Herd trailed 1-0.
Hugh answered with a shot on target two minutes later, but UD keeper Madelyn Dewey made the save. Dewey came in net for Dayton to start the second half.
McVicker made her seventh save in the final minute of play as the Herd fell on the road.
