White scores first goal of the season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's soccer team fell in it Conference USA-opener to the Florida Atlantic Owls, 2-1, Friday night at Hoops Family Field.

Marshall falls to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. The Owls are now 2-2-1 and 1-0-0 in league action.

"A tough loss at the end of the day, given how we started the game, how we played out the first half and started the second half," Herd head coach Michael Swan said. "I really think it had to do with about 10 to 15 minutes there we just switched off completely. There was the point in the game where you get tired and you start thinking about, not really changes but the players started to get a little fatigued and the mental side of the game goes a little bit. We suffered in those 10 minutes, and FAU who are an experienced program, who have been at the top of the league capitalized on that.

"But we fought till the end. Got some great compliments from (FAU head coach Patrick) Baker there on how the players are performing. He is aware of where we have been for the last couple of weeks and he is amazed to see us come out and compete the way we did. Credit to FAU, they stuck with it. They got a much deserved goal off the corner, but then a struggle that goes their way. But, that is conference play and unfortunately we came out on the wrong side of it tonight."

"Still very proud of the ladies and the way they competed and fought tonight."

Marshall came out right running right from the start and netted the first goal of the match just one minute and 15 seconds after the opening kickoff. Sophomore Morgan White scored her first goal of the season after taking a pass from sophomore Iselin Noevik, maneuvered around the keeper who came out of the net to try and stop the play, then booted the ball into the back of the net.

Florida Atlantic went on the attack, but the Herd defense stood tall defending the net in the first half. The Owls outshot Marshall 5-3 in the first 45 minutes. Herd sophomore goalkeeper Courtney McVicker tallied three saves. Marshall went in at the half leading 1-0.

In the second half, Florida Atlantic was aggressive again with nine total shots to the Herd's two. The Owls finally scored in the 69th minute to tie the match. An unfortunate own goal against Marshall in the 72nd minute put Florida Atlantic on top. The Herd continued to fight through the final buzzer but just could not find the equalizer.

Next up for the Herd is a non-conference contest at Appalachian State on Saturday, March 13 with kickoff at 3 p.m.
