Second road win for the Herd
Box Score
BOONE, N.C. – Behind a pair of goals from freshman forward Abi Hugh assisted by sophomore forward Morgan White, Marshall University women's soccer team (2-2) picked up its second road victory of the season, 2-1, at Appalachian State (6-11-1) on Saturday afternoon in Boone, N.C.
"For the first 45 minutes, you could see we were struggling with the long trip to North Carolina," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the win. "We had a good chat, made a few adjustments at half time, and I thought we came out looking like the team that would get the first goal. The goal eventually came after some great chances and Abi showed great quality in front of goal."
App State's Jordan Grigsby fired the first shot on goal of the game in the fourth minute, but Herd goalkeeper Courtney McVicker made the save. Hugh answered with a shot nine minutes later, but it was saved by Jazz Salters.
MU freshman Logan Ragland got the next shot on goal, but it was saved by Salters in the 19th minute. McVicker made another save on Grigsby in the 20th minute.
McVicker stopped the final shot of the first half she faced in the 42nd minute to keep the score 0-0 at halftime.
Hugh fired the next two shots on goal at Salters, but both attempts were saved in the 64th and 68th minutes, respectively. Junior Kat Gonzalez fired a pair of attempts as both went off target.
Then in the 80th minute, sophomore Morgan White fired a shot at Salters that was saved. However, Hugh was there to put home a goal for her third of the season as White collected her second assist of the year.
"To concede a poor goal right after taking the lead was disappointing, but being a young team and learning how to handle key situations is part of the process," Swan said. "We responded superbly. Morgan showed her desire to win the ball back for us. Then to show composure and find Abi again was brilliant."
Lauren Murphy tied the game for Mountaineers in the 88th minute, but the tie didn't last for long as Hugh netted a brace 32 seconds later on an assist from White for Hugh's team-leading fourth goal and White's team-high third assist of the season, which proved to be the game winner.
"It's a big win for us and we get some great momentum going into a tough week on the road," Swan commented.
