Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Marshall women's soccer (2-3, 0-2 C-USA) battled, but came up short in a 2-1 defeat at Western Kentucky (5-1-1, 3-0-1 C-USA) on Thursday in Bowling Green, Ky.
"I thought our intent and our commitment in the game was brilliant tonight," Marshall head coach Michael Swan said after the loss. "This whole week was one of our best weeks of prep and I thought that translated into the game against a very talented WKU team. They are a talented team this year and I feel if we play as well as we did tonight and if you get that slice of luck or brilliance in the final third, you might come away with a win."
The Hilltoppers fired the first three shots on goal, but they were all saved by Marshall goalkeeper Courtney McVicker in the second, 13th and 18th minutes.
Forward Kat Gonzalez got off the first two shots for the Herd, both went off target.
WKU was first on the scoreboard with a goal by Ellie Belcher in the 27th minute.
McVicker rebounded by saving the next shot on target two minutes later to keep the deficit at 1-0.
Herd midfielder Olivia Gandee recorded her first shot on goal of the season, but the attempt was saved by Hilltopper goalkeeper Ashley Kobylinski. McVicker then saved the final attempt of the first half in the 39th minute as the Herd trailed 1-0 at halftime.
After both offenses couldn't muster much offense in the first nine minutes of the second half and a shot off target by sophomore Madison Vogler, MU drew a foul in the box for a penalty. Defender Metztli Gonzalez stepped up and put the attempt past the keeper to tie the game 1-1.
Just after the penalty, WKU tried to answer, however McVicker saved the shot to keep the game tied.
Defender Lauren Hollis then had an attempt on goal for the Herd, but it was saved by Kobylinski.
In the 62nd minute, Ansley Cate scored for WKU to put the Herd down 2-1.
Neither side had a shot on goal in the final 27 minutes of the game as all four of the Hilltoppers shots went off target as MU fell in the contest.
"One of the big pluses tonight was our ability to get back level and give ourselves an opportunity," Swan said. "I'm proud of how we battled and look forward to get back at it on Monday at FIU."
