Jones Tied for Fourth after Round One at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. – The Marshall men's golf team completed round one of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Friday. Sophomore Tyler Jones leads the Herd and is tied for fourth.
The Thundering Herd finished the day in 12th place.
"Tyler Jones played really well today," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "It was fun to watch him work his way around the golf course in these conditions. Christian Boyd bounced back from a tough second hole and played really solid today. As a team we just make too many mistakes. We have got to find a way to minimize damage on the course and make no worse than a bogey. We are making way too many double bogeys and worse. Hopefully tomorrow we can stay away from the big numbers and move up the leaderboard."
Jones totaled three birdies for the day including back-to-back holes on Nos. 15 and 16. He ended the day with a plus-2, 73, and is just two shots back of the lead. Sophomore Christian Boyd rallied after a triple-bogey on the second hole of the day to sink two birdies later in the round and finish just outside of the top 20 at 22nd.
As a team, the Herd hit a total of nine birdies. Junior Isaac Prine, who is playing as an individual, also dropped a birdie putt on No. 13. Marshall will be one of the first teams to tee off Saturday morning, beginning at 7:15 a.m. Live scoring is provided through Golfstat.com.
Belmont leads the field by two strokes over Longwood. Brandon Weaver of Longwood is the leader on the player board after shooting an even par, 71, and is one stroke ahead of Evan Davis of Belmont and Matthew Larkin of Wofford.
