Herd with fifth-best team score of 12 teams in final round
Final Results
PINEHURST, N.C. – The Marshall men's golf team completed the final round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Sunday, at Pinehurst No. 8.
As a team, the Herd kept seeing improvement throughout the event that ended with the fifth-best team score out of the 12 teams in the third round. The Thundering Herd finished in 11th place. Sophomore Tyler Jones earned his first top 10 finish of the season, tied for seventh, and the third of his career.
"Tyler (Jones) finished off a great tournament today," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "He is playing incredible golf to start the spring. It was really good to see low rounds from Will (Straub) and Bradley (Plaziak) today. We are looking forward to getting back to Huntington and getting some practice in before we head to the Furman Intercollegiate in 10 days."
Jones scored a 1-over 72 in the final round to finish with a 6-over 219 for the tournament, just five strokes back of the lead. Redshirt senior Will Straub saw his score improve yet again, this time by three strokes to finish with a 3-over 74. Senior Brad Plaziak lowered his score by four strokes from the second round to score a 3-over 74, as well. Junior Isaac Prine, playing as an individual, dropped his score by one stroke from Saturday.
The Dayton Flyers held off Abilene Christian's strong round by two strokes to win the team award. Abilene Christian had the lowest round of all the teams on Sunday with an even par, 284, and moved up nine places on the leaderboard. Logan Sabins of Butler took home the individual award with a 1-over, 214 after three rounds. Three players tied for runner-up coming in three shots behind Sabins.
