Volleyball Secures Spot in C-USA Tournament with win at ODU

NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall volleyball team battled out a five-set win (20-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 15-9) over the Old Dominion Monarchs on Sunday. With the win, the Thundering Herd secures a spot in the Conference USA Tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss., April 1-3.
 
The Herd improved to 9-4 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Monarchs drop to 7-7 and 4-5 in league action. Marshall and Old Dominion face each other again on Monday at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on CUSAtv. It will be the final match of the regular season for the Herd.
 
"This team continues to prove me right with the grit and perseverance they continue to show," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "It wasn't our best day statistically but we stuck together and fought out a hard win to a really good ODU team. Sarah Schank continues to keep us in rhythm and Ciara Debell took the team and led us offensively and did not waiver at any point.
 
"We're continuing to grow and progress day by day. I'm excited to get back at it tomorrow."
 
Redshirt senior Ciara Debell led the Herd with a season-high 23 kills. Debell added 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. She also added three total blocks. Junior Macy McElhaney was second with 10 kills and recorded three blocks. Senior Destiny Leon tallied eight kills while hitting .462, and led the team with six total blocks. As a team, Marshall tallied 10 blocks.
 
Freshman Anna Calcagno had five kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Megan Taylor and redshirt freshman Olivia Fogo had three kills each.
 
Senior setter Sydney Lostumo recorded 44 assists to go along with four kills, five digs, two blocks and one ace. Junior libero Sarah Schank led the Herd with 22 digs and added one kill, one ace and one assist. Freshman Riley Winslow finished with four kills and one ace.
 
Marshall took the early lead in the first set before the Monarchs rallied and tied the set at 13-13. There were four total ties and one lead change as Old Dominion went ahead for good at 17-16. The Monarchs finished off the frame outscoring Marshall 8-4 the rest of the way for the win.
 
The second set featured eight ties and four lead changes. The teams battles back-and-forth until the Herd jumped back out in front on a kill by Calcagno at 14-13. Marshall then fired out a 6-0 run, highlighted by three kills from Debell and an ace from Calcagno. A kill from Lostumo moved the action to set-point at 24-17, then a solo block from Leon ended the period and tied the match at 1-1.
 
Marshall started out in front in the third set, however Old Dominion rallied with another back-and-forth battle ensuing. There were nine ties and one lead change. The Monarchs took the lead at 22-21 and closed out the set, 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Herd took control in the fourth set. There were three ties and two lead changes early before Marshall went ahead for good at 4-3. The Herd went on a roll through the remainder of the set, hitting .417 as a team with 12 kills and just two errors in 24 attacks. On the other side, Old Dominion hit just .065 in the fourth committing eight attack errors. Marshall tallied three blocks in the set. A kill from Debell gave the Herd the win, 25-15, and forced the fifth set.
 
Marshall led from beginning to end in the decisive set, starting with a 5-0 run. Old Dominion pulled within two at 10-8, but a solo block from McElhaney increased the lead back to three. Debell ended the day with her 23rd kill. The Herd hit .417 again as a team in the fifth set with six kills and just one error in 12 attacks. The Monarchs committed seven attack errors and had five kills in 18 attacks, for a -.111 hitting percentage.
