Box Score (PDF)

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Marshall volleyball team fell in four sets (25-23, 17-25, 18-25, 16-25) to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Monday.

Marshall is now 6-4 overall and 4-4 in Conference USA. Middle Tennessee improves to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in league play.

"Today was a big learning lesson for us as a team," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We did not show up as prepared and ready to fight in all aspects of the game. We did not respond well after coming off a five-set win yesterday. However, we are in control of the things that need to be changed and I am confident in our team to bounce back and get ready for FAU."

Redshirt senior Ciara Debell led the Herd in kills (13) and digs (14) in the loss. It was her sixth double-double of the season. Junior Macy McElhaney tallied 11 kills with a .360 hitting percentage. Freshman Anna Calcagno recorded seven kills including the final point of the first set. Sophomore Megan Taylor had five kills, while senior Destiny Leon added two and junior Zoie Holley had one. Leon kept her consecutive matches with a block streak alive, now at 37-straight, with two total blocks.

Senior setter Sydney Lostumo finished with 35 assists, 10 digs and three kills. Junior libero Sarah Schank ended the match with 13 digs and two assists. Freshman Riley Winslow added nine digs and one assist.

Marshall had to fight its way back in the first set. After trailing early, a 5-0 run gave the Herd a 15-12 lead. Middle Tennessee kept things close and tied the score two more times, however Marshall managed to step back in front and capped off the set with a kill from Calcagno.

The Herd trailed throughout the second set. After a 7-0 run from the Blue Raiders, Marshall put up a 6-0 run to pull back within five, 16-11. The Herd could not close the gap as Middle Tennessee finished the set and tied the match at 1-1.

In the third set, Marshall jumped out to the early lead but could not hang on as the Blue Raiders came back to take the lead at 9-8, and hold on for the rest of the set.

The Herd fell behind early again in the fourth set and could not hold off Middle Tennessee from claiming the match in four sets.

Marshall returns to action back in the Cam Henderson Center, March 14-15, as the Florida Atlantic Owls travel north for two crucial Conference USA matches. Both contests are scheduled for a 12 p.m. first serve.
