Four Herd Athletes Qualify For NCAA East Preliminary Round

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Four Marshall track and field athletes earned spots in the 2021 NCAA East Preliminary Round, as the NCAA announced qualifiers Thursday.
Mikah Alleyne and Ashonti Warner each qualified in the 400 meter hurdles. Safiyyah Mitchell earned a spot in the 100 meter hurdles and Lauren Zaglifa will compete in the pole vault.
The meet is set for Wednesday, May 26 to Saturday, May 29 in Jacksonville, Florida on the campus of the University of North Florida.
The East Preliminary Round serves as one of two qualifiers for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning June 9 in Eugene, Oregon. The West Preliminary Round occurs at the same time as the East Preliminaries in College Station, Texas.
The qualifiers are based on the top-48 athletes in the East Region in their respective events based upon times or marks set at any point during the 2021 outdoor season.
This is the 13th straight season that Marshall sends at least one athlete to the NCAA East Preliminary Round, with last year's outdoor season being canceled. In 2019, the Herd sent three athletes: Mitchell and Warner as well as Christianna Dogan.
Each athlete will compete in the first round of events on Thursday to qualify for quarterfinal events on Saturday. Below is more information on each athlete:
Mikah Alleyne: 400 meter hurdles
East Ranking and Qualifying Time: Ranked 33rd, 59.22 at Kentucky Invitational (April 30, 2021)
Scheduled First Round Competition Time: Thursday, May 27 at 8:20 p.m.
East Ranking and Qualifying Time: Ranked 44th – 13.51 at Conference USA Outdoor Championships (May 13, 2021)
Scheduled First Round Competition Time: Thursday, May 27 at 6 p.m.
East Ranking and Qualifying Time: Ranked 31st – 59.06 at Conference USA Outdoor Championships (May 13, 2021)
Scheduled First Round Competition Time: Thursday, May 27 at 8:20 p.m.
East Ranking and Qualifying Mark: Ranked 41st – 4.03 meters (13 feet, 2.5 inches) at Conference USA Outdoor Championships (May 12, 2021)

- Alleyne's time of 59.22 set at the Kentucky Invitational was at the time the school record, only broken by Ashonti Warner this past weekend at the C-USA Championships.
- Alleyne competes in the meet in her first career outdoor season, as the outdoor 2020 season was canceled due to Covid-19.
- Alleyne's 400m dash time was in the qualifying standard for the NCAA East Preliminaries, but she will focus solely on the 400mH.
East Ranking and Qualifying Time: Ranked 44th – 13.51 at Conference USA Outdoor Championships (May 13, 2021)
Scheduled First Round Competition Time: Thursday, May 27 at 6 p.m.
- Mitchell's qualifying time of 13.51 was set last weekend at the C-USA Championships, when she earned first place in the 100mH. Her winning time was also a personal record, the second-best performance in school history.
- Her clutch performance also edged her into the meet, with the 44th best qualifying time.
- This is her second time qualifying for the East Preliminaries (2019).
East Ranking and Qualifying Time: Ranked 31st – 59.06 at Conference USA Outdoor Championships (May 13, 2021)
Scheduled First Round Competition Time: Thursday, May 27 at 8:20 p.m.
- Warner joins Alleyne in the 400 meter hurdles. Warner's time was set last weekend at the C-USA Championships and is the school record.
- She makes her second appearance in the East Preliminaries (2019).
- Warner is the first Herd athlete to qualify in multiple seasons in the 400mH.

- Zaglifa is the first Marshall athlete in program history to qualify for the East Prelims in the pole vault.
- Like Warner's 400mH time, Zaglifa's qualifying mark currently stands as the school record and was set at the C-USA Outdoor Championships last weekend.
- Zaglifa's qualifying clearance is the only one over four meters in school history.
