HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall track and field's four qualifying athletes compete Thursday in the NCAA East Preliminary Round hosted by the University of North Florida.
Qualified athletes for the Thundering Herd include Mikah Alleyne and Ashonti Warner in the 400 meter hurdles, Safiyyah Mitchell in the 100 meter hurdles, and Lauren Zaglifa in the pole vault.
"We are super excited about this opportunity," head coach Jeff Small said. "Safiyyah and Ashonti have been here before and know what to expect. Lauren has been working towards this goal her whole career while Mikah is so young in her event that the sky is the limit for her. They have all looked great in practice and are ready to do what it takes to advance to the next round."
Each athlete competes in a field of 48 athletes in their respective events. For Alleyne, Mitchell and Warner, they need to finish in the top three in their individual heat, or have among the next six best times, to advance to compete Saturday in the quarterfinals for an opportunity to go to the NCAA Championships.
For Zaglifa, the top-12 finishers Thursday in the pole vault advance to Nationals in Eugene, Oregon.
Zaglifa competes in flight two of the pole vault, beginning at 3 p.m. EST. Mitchell is set to go in heat five of the 100 meter hurdles beginning at 6 p.m. The 400 meter hurdles begin at approximately 8:20 p.m., with Alleyne in heat one and Warner in heat four.
