Herd Baseball Drops Game One at No. 19 Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Herd baseball (8-29, 4-21 C-USA) fell in game one on Friday to the No. 19 Charlotte 49ers (32-14, 19-6 C-USA) in Charlotte 7-5.

Starting pitcher Chad Heiner hit a batter in the bottom of the first, but stranded him at second for a scoreless inning.
Â
Third baseman Travis Sankovich led off the next half inning with a walk, and a batter later, designated hitter Peter Hutzal singled to center to put runners at first second with one out. Then with two outs, left fielder Kyle Schaefer hit an 0-1 pitch to first where the first baseman committed an error scoring Sankovich to give MU the early 1-0 lead. However, the 49ers answered in the bottom of the second with a run to tie the game.

The Herd didn't wait long to regain the lead as Sankovich grounded out with the bases loaded, scoring second baseman Devin Ward to give Marshall a 2-1 advantage.

Heiner came back strong throwing scoreless third and fourth frames to keep the advantage at 2-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Charlotte struck for four runs to take a 5-2 lead. All four runs came with two outs.

Catcher Ryan Leitch led off sixth with a single to left center and Schaefer followed with a double down the right-field line. A batter later, Ward reached on an error and scored both Leitch and Schaefer to pull the Herd within one, 5-4.

After a 1-2-3 inning by relief pitcher Josh Zeboskey in the bottom of the sixth, Leitch doubled down the right-field line with two outs in the top of the seventh to score first baseman Zach Inskeep, tying the game at 5-5, but 49er third baseman Austin Knight homered to give CLT a 6-5 lead in the next half inning.

Charlotte added an insurance run in the bottom of eighth as it took the contest from MU.

Marshall is back at it against Charlotte in a double header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
