No. 1 Men’s Soccer Takes on No. 15 Virginia Tech

Kickoff from Sentara Park in Harrisonburg, Va. set for 1 p.m.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 1-ranked Marshall men's soccer team faces No. 15 Virginia Tech in the teams' final match of the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational, hosted by James Madison. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
Marshall enters at 1-0-0, while the Hokies come in at 0-0-1.
 
There will not be a live video stream for the match. LIVE STATS will be provided.
 
The Thundering Herd started off its defense of the 2020 National Title with a bang, lighting up the scoreboard in a 6-1 win over No. 21 James Madison. Marshall had no troubles finishing on the attack as Vitor Dias (two goals), Vinicus Fernandes, Milo Yosef, Adam Lubell and Paulo Lino all scored. For Lubell and Lino it was their first career goals.
 
The Dukes outshot the Herd 14-12, however Marshall had eight shots on goal to JMU's four. Oliver Semmle tallied three saves.
 
Dias tied three career-highs in the win with two goals, two assists and six points. The senior had the same numbers last season against West Virginia Tech (Feb. 21), and it was his third career match with two goals, the other coming against South Carolina (March 6). Yosef netted his 17th career goal and is now tied for ninth all-time in team history. Fernandes scored his ninth career goal and also had an assist, the seventh in his time with the Herd.
 
The Opponent
The Virginia Tech Hokies entered the season No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason poll. The Hokies were unable to finish its first match against Kansas City on Thursday as weather impacted the contest. The teams finished regulation tied at 2-2 and were not able to play even four minutes of the first overtime period before the match was called on account of lighting.
 
The Kansas City Roos scored first in the 18th minute off a penalty kick. Virginia Tech tied it up in the 34th minute on a goal by Landon Ameres. One minute and 33 seconds later, the Hokies took a 2-1 lead with Tyler Taber finding the back of the net. Kansas City tied things back up at 2-2 in the 66th minute. Virginia Tech outshot the Roos 20-6 and 10-3 in shots on goal.
 
Virginia Tech returns two of its top three goal scorers from last season. Jacob Labovitz led in 2020-21 with nine goals and also had three assists. Nick Blacklock, who was tied for second with four goals, is also back. Kyle McDowell led the Hokies in assists with five and is back for his senior season.
 
The Hokies used three goalkeepers in 2020-21 with Matt Zambetti the main returner, playing 992 minutes in the net. He allowed 16 goals, had a 1.45 goals against average, made 43 saves and had a .729 save percentage in 10 matches. In the 2021-opener against Kansas City, Zambetti played the entire match and had one save.
