HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 1 Marshall men's soccer team lost to the 15th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies, 3-2, on Sunday from Sentara Park in Harrisonburg, Va. It was the final match of the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational hosted by James Madison.
The Herd is now 1-1-0 while the Hokies improve to 1-0-1.
Both of Marshall's goals came in the first half. Senior Vitor Dias scored the first goal of the match at the nine-minute mark. It was his third goal of the season and 12th of his career. In the 18th minute, senior Vinicius Fernandes took control of the ball near the top of the box, after a Virginia Tech defender attempted to clear it out, and fired a low shot that found the back of the net. It was Fernandes' second goal of the year and 10th of his career.
The Hokies outshot Marshall 7-5 in the first half and 3-2 on goal. However, senior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle made three saves including two just 17 seconds apart in the third minute. After the Herd took the 2-0 lead, Virginia Tech had another chance its third shot on goal at the 18-minute mark that was stopped by Semmle.
Marshall went in at the half up 2-0.
Virginia Tech turned things around in the second half, scoring first off a corner kick in the 64th minute. Less than two minutes later, the Herd was called for a penalty in the box and the Hokies converted the PK attempt to tie the match at 2-2. In the 73rd minute, Virginia Tech was awarded another penalty kick. The Hokies were successful again and took a 3-2 lead, holding the advantage through the rest of the match.
Marshall returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m., as preseason 25th-ranked, and brand new Conference USA opponent, Coastal Carolina visits Hoops Family Field.
