No. 7 Men’s Soccer Welcomes (RV) Coastal Carolina for 2021 Home-Opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 7th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team is at Hoops Family Field on Saturday at 1 p.m., as new Conference USA member (RV) Coastal Carolina comes to Huntington. The match will be the 2021 home-opener for the Thundering Herd.
The Herd enters the match at 1-1-0 overall and the Chanticleers come in at 0-1-1. This will be Marshall's first league match of the season. Coastal Carolina is 0-0-1 in conference action after playing to a 0-0 draw against No. 14 Kentucky to open the season.

Series History: 1 all-time meeting, Coastal Carolina defeated Marshall 4-1 on Sept. 20, 2002 in Lexington, Ky.
The Herd opened the season with a scoring barrage at then No. 21 James Madison. Marshall netted six goals in the win. Senior Vitor Dias scored twice and had two assists. Senior Vinicius Fernandes had one goal and one assist. Redshirt junior Milo Yosef recorded his 17th career goal while redshirt sophomore Adam Lubell and freshman Paul Lino scored the first career goals.
Against then No. 15 Virginia Tech, Marshall opened the scoring with two goals early in the first half. Dias scored his third goal of the year and Fernandes tallied his second. Unfortunately for the Herd, the team struggled in the second half as the Hokies scored three goals, including two on penalty kicks to take the 3-2 win.
Dias, who was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, leads the Herd with three goals. He also leads the team, the league and the NCAA in points scored with eight and points per game (4.00). Fernandes is right behind Dias with two goals and the two seniors are tied for the team lead with two assists.
Senior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle has played all 180 minutes in the net to begin the year. Semmle has allowed four goals and has eight saves.
The Opponent
The Chanticleers begin its first season in Conference USA for men's soccer. Coastal was ranked No. 25 in the preseason polls, but slipped out of the top 25 after the opening weekend. The Chanticleers started with the 0-0 draw at home against Kentucky, and then were blanked 1-0 by No. 24 High Point. Coastal Carolina is still looking for its first goal of the season, however the defense has allowed just one in 200 minutes of action.
Alvaro Garcia-Pasqual leads the team in shots with eight and has two on goal. Dimitris Moraitakis has four shots with three on goal. Joey Batrouni has been in goal every minute so far allowing just the one goal and has recorded 14 saves. Batrouni sports a 0.47 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.
Following the Saturday afternoon match, Marshall goes back on the road for two contests at East Tennessee State (Sept. 7) and at Bowling Green (Sept. 11). Coastal Carolina stays on the road as well as it travels to South Carolina (Sept. 11).
