Volleyball Falls to Host Redhawks in First Match at SEMO Invitational

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Marshall volleyball team lost its first match of the SEMO Invitational to the host Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in four sets (25-18, 13-25, 18-25, 15-25), Friday afternoon from the Houck Field House. The Herd gets right back into action at 5:30 p.m. ET Friday, against the Kansas City Roos.

Marshall's match with Kansas City will not have a video stream, but there will be live stats.

The Thundering Herd is now 2-5 while the Redhawks improve to 5-2.

Sophomore Anna Calcagno led the team in kills with 11, while fifth-year senior Destiny Leon had 10. Leon led Marshall with four total blocks. Her streak of 6-straight matches with five or more comes to an end, however Leon has tallied at least one block in now 49-straight contests.

Graduate Ciara Debell finished with seven kills and 15 digs, bringing her consecutive matches streak with a double-double to an end. Debell has tallied double-digit digs in 7-straight contests. The Ocala, Fla., native also moved ahead of Ally Kiekover (2013-16) for eighth place all-time at Marshall in career kills with 1,154. Next up is Kellie Beckelheimer (1998-01) with 1,208 in seventh place.

Junior Essence Clerkley and redshirt sophomore Olivia Fogo had four kills each. Senior Macy McElhaney and junior Lydia Montague had two blocks each.

Fifth-year senior Sydney Lostumo led with 29 assists and had four digs. Freshman Brynn Brown tallied four digs and four assists. Senior Sarah Schank recorded 12 digs, had two assists and two kills. Schank is now up to 855 digs in her career.

In the first set the Herd trailed in the beginning and battled back to tie it up at 7-7. The set then went back-and-forth as there were eight ties and three lead changes. Marshall took its first lead at 13-12 on a block from Montague and junior Megan Taylor. SEMO regained the lead until the Herd put together another run to get back out front and stay there, taking the win 25-18.

After dropping the first set, Southeast Missouri State stayed out front throughout the remainder of the contest to take the four-set victory.
