MOREHEAD STATE, Ky. – The Marshall volleyball team pulled together and fought for a comeback victory in five sets (25-23, 16-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-5) against the Morehead State Eagles on Thursday, at the Morehead Invite. Marshall returns to the court on Friday at 2 p.m. against the 4th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers.

The Herd improves to 4-7 while the Eagles drop to 3-6. Friday's match against Pittsburgh will not be live streamed, but will have LIVE STATS.

"I am so proud of this huge group effort tonight," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We have faced a lot of adversity this season and we came together and pushed through the reigning OVC (Ohio Valley Conference) champion, Morehead State. Being able to rely on every offensive player was a huge reason for the success. Sydney (Lostumo) distributed the ball really well and that's because of the relentless effort Sarah Schank puts in every day. We're excited to get back at it tomorrow against Pitt."

Eight players tallied at least one kill in the match and three reached double-figures. Graduate Ciara Debell led the way with 19, her third-straight match with at least 19. In the second set, Debell surpassed Kellie Beckelheimer (1998-01) for seventh place all-time in program history in career kills. Debell now has 1,221 and trails Laura Der by five for sixth place. Debell finished with seven digs, and was also a perfect 19-for-19 on receptions.

Junior Megan Taylor had another solid outing with 12 kills, her third-straight match in double-figures. Senior Macy McElhaney came through with 12 kills as well and hit .417 to lead the team. Fifth-year senior Destiny Leon had eight kills and hit at a .375 clip. Junior Lydia Montague had three kills and fellow junior Essence Clerkley had two. Junior Meagan Camden recorded her first career kill in the third set. Freshman Brynn Brown tallied one kill, the final point of the night in the fifth set.

Fifth-year senior setter Sydney Lostumo finished with 42 assists and a career-high 17 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Lostumo also tallied her team-leading 18th ace of the year. It was the 101st service ace of her collegiate career, and her 78th as a member of the Herd.

Senior libero Sarah Schank led the Herd with 22 digs and also tallied a career-high 12 assists for her first double-double of the season. Schank was also a perfect 37-for-37 on receptions in the match. The countdown to 1,000 career digs for Schank now stands at 934, needing 66 more to reach the milestone. Camden, along with recording her first career kill, also had 12 digs for her third match in double-figures this season. Brown added eight digs and two assists as well.

The Herd tallied 11 total team blocks. Leon led the squad with six more to give her now 63 for the season, as well as 53-straight matches with a block. Lostumo recorded a career-best five blocks in the win. McElhaney finished with four while Montague had three, Clerkley chipped in two and Taylor had one block.

In the first set, the Herd trailed throughout much of the frame briefly taking a lead at 5-4 after a block from Leon and McElhaney, before the Eagles regained control. There were three more ties before Morehead State used a run to go up by five at 16-11. The Herd kept fighting and tied it back up at 17-17 and again at 19-19. Marshall gained the lead at 20-19 on an Eagles' error. A kill from Debell led to an Eagles timeout as the Herd led by two. A service ace from Leon moved it to set-point at 24-20. Morehead State scored three-straight to battle back before a kill from Debell finished the set and gave Marshall a 1-0 lead. Debell had five kills in the set including three of the Herd's final five points. As a team, Marshall hit .364 in the first set.

The second set had two ties and two lead changes early until Morehead State gained the lead at 3-2 and held it the rest of the way. The Herd struggled in the second set with finding its offensive rhythm. The match was tied at 1-1.

There were six ties and three lead changes in the third set as Marshall still battled but just could not come through in the end. The Herd kept it close and even took a lead at 20-19 off a kill from McElhaney. The Eagles went on a 4-0 run, leading to a Marshall timeout, and eventually grabbing the win to go up 2-1.

The Herd's offense sprang back to life in the fourth set as the team's back was against the wall. Marshall hit .278 as a team and held Morehead State to a .119 hitting percentage. The Herd led from beginning to end as Debell tallied six more kills in the set. Lostumo and Schank combined for 13 digs to keep rallies going and leading to more Marshall points. The Herd's defense also forced seven Morehead State attack errors as the Eagles had 12 total errors across the board in the fourth. A Morehead State ball-handling error was the final point as Marshall tied the match at 2-2 and forced the fifth set.

It was the Herd's third-straight match going to five sets, and Marshall kept the momentum rolling as it dominated the decisive frame, 15-5. The Herd's offense was on fire, hitting .600 as a team with nine kills in 15 attacks and no errors. Six different players recorded a kill in the fifth set. Marshall's defense forced five more Morehead State attack errors as well. McElhaney, Clerkley and Leon teamed up for two total team blocks. McElhaney had her hands in both. The Herd opened the set on a 6-0 run. Marshall led 10-3 on Taylor's 12th kill of the day when Morehead State called its final timeout. The Herd finished the night with a 5-2 run, and capped it with a kill from Brown. The freshman took a swing from the back row that found the far back corner for the final point and the victory.
