Debell moves into fourth place all-time at Marshall in career kills

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Marshall volleyball team fought hard but ultimately fell in four sets to the Toledo Rockets (25-18, 20-25, 19-25, 21-25) Saturday at the Morehead Invitational. Graduate Ciara Debell moved into fourth place all-time in team history in career kills with 1,245.
The Thundering Herd drops to 4-9 overall and the Rockets improve to 9-3.
Debell led the Herd offensively with 19 kills, her fifth match with at least 19 this season. She went into the match with 1,226 career kills and was tied with Laura Der (2010-13) for sixth place on the Herd's all-time charts. In the fourth set, Debell moved ahead of Cassie Weaver (2013-16) and then Bridget Repsher (1991-94) and into fourth place. Next up is Alisha Bable (1995-97) in third place with 1,350. Debell has 1,331 total in her collegiate career as she recorded 86 kills in her time at Florida Gulf Coast.
Senior Macy McElhaney and junior Megan Taylor both finished with eight kills. Junior Essence Clerkley tallied four kills. Fifth-year senior Destiny Leon recorded two kills while fifth-year senior Sydney Lostumo, senior Zoie Holley and junior Lydia Montague finished with one kill each.
Senior libero Sarah Schank had an incredible match with 34 digs, average of 8.50 per set, and was also a perfect 23-for-23 on receptions. Schank had 19 digs after the first two sets. The senior now stands at 977 career digs, needing just 23 more to reach the 1,000-plateau. Schank added four assists and one ace.
Lostumo finished the match with 34 assists and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Lostumo has 1,487 assists in her Marshall career (1,879 in her collegiate career) and needs just five more assists to move into the top 10 in program history. She added two more aces, her seventh match of the year with at least two.
The Herd totaled eight team blocks. Leon, Holley and Taylor had three blocks each. Leon's blocks streak is now at 55-straight matches. McElhaney had two blocks with Debell, Clerkley and freshman Brynn Brown chipping in one each.
Brown also finished the match with eight digs and three assists. Junior Meagan Camden tallied six digs, one ace and was 9-for-9 on receptions. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Fogo had one assist and one dig. Sophomore Riley Winslow had one dig and fellow sophomore Anna Calcagno was 5-for-5 on receptions.
The first set featured four ties and just one lead change as Marshall took control at 4-3 on a kill from Leon. The Rockets tied the set at 15-15 before a kill from Taylor ended Toledo's scoring run and kept the Herd in front. Lostumo ended the set with back-to-back aces as Marshall took a 1-0 lead. As a team the Herd hit .281 in the first set. Debell tallied five kills and McElhaney had four. Schank recorded seven digs in the first to begin her day.
The second set had three ties and one lead change. This time Toledo took control early at 5-4 and held on. The Herd put together a few short runs to attempt to keep the set close but could not finish. The Rockets tied the match at 1-1. Debell added four more kills and Schank rang up 12 digs in the second frame.
Marshall scored first in the set off a kill from McElhaney, however Toledo took the lead and held on for the rest of the set. The Herd had a 4-0 run to tie it up at 10-10, but again Toledo jumped back up.
The fourth set had just two ties and two lead changes early before the Rockets gained the lead again at 4-3. Marshall kept fighting and pulled within two points late in the period at 19-17, 20-18, 22-20 and again at 23-21. Toledo finally finished the set and the match for its ninth win of the year. Debell finished the set with six kills, four coming late in the comeback attempt, to help her move into fourth place.
The Herd finished its non-conference schedule at the Morehead Invitational. Marshall jumps right into Conference USA play on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25, on the road at No. 23 WKU. The Herd finally returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Oct. 1-2 as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders come to town.
