Men’s Golf Tied for Fifth After Day One of EKU Intercollegiate

Richmond, Ky. – The Marshall men's golf team is tied for fifth after the first two rounds of the EKU Intercollegiate on Friday, played at the University Club at Arlington. Fifth-year senior Noah Mullens and sophomore Brett Montgomery are both in the top 10, at tied for eighth.
 
The final round tees off Saturday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring is provided by GolfStat.com.
 
"It was a really good start to the season for us today," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "The guys really played some solid golf. It was really good to see our experienced players play so well and provide a good example for our younger guys. I was really happy with the play of the younger guys, playing on their first collegiate tournament. I am really looking forward to tomorrow!"
 
Mullens shot a 2-over 72 in the first round and then followed up with a 2-under 68 in the second round to finish at an even par, 140. He shot a total of eight birdies in the two rounds. Mullens moved up 12 places on the leaderboard from the first to the second round. Montgomery, playing in his first collegiate action scored a 1-under 69 in the first round and then a 1-over 71 in the second to also finish at even par. Montgomery had seven total birdies including two back-to-back at the end of the day to help him stay in the top 10.
 
Junior Tyler Jones rebounded in the second round. After scoring a 5-over 75 in the first, Jones came back with a 1-under 69 in the second and moved up 34 places on the leaderboard. Fifth-year senior Brad Plaziak improved by one stroke in the second round and shot a 2-over 72. Sophomore Andrew Wyss shot well and stayed consistent with his two rounds in his first collegiate tournament. Sophomore Joseph Kalaskey, playing as an individual, improved by two strokes in the second round.
 
As a team, Marshall scored a 7-over 287 in the first round and then came through with an even par 280 in the second. The Herd moved up two places on the leaderboard and are tied with Morehead State.
 
Western Carolina leads the team competition with a 10-under 550. Jacksonville State is second at six shots back. Three players are tied for the lead in Kyle Schmidt of Dayton, along with Jake Peacock and Kyle Kushnir of Western Carolina. They are sitting at 6-under and hold a two-shot lead over Lake Leroux of Eastern Kentucky.
