DAYTON, Ohio – The Marshall volleyball team fought back late, but unfortunately fell short in five sets (19-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-16, 9-15) to the DePaul Blue Demons, Friday night. The Thundering Herd returns to the court on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Wright State and again at 5 p.m. versus Ball State.
Â
The Herd falls to 2-2 for the year. DePaul is now 3-1. Marshall's match against Wright State on Saturday will be on ESPN+. There will not be stream for the contest against Ball State, however Live Stats will be available. Â
Â
"We battled hard against a very good DePaul team," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "DePaul defended the ball really well and were terminal. We had some awesome moments especially from Anna (Calcagno) and we will look to build off those and get back after it tomorrow!"
Â
Graduate Ciara Debell led the Herd on offense with 11 kills and added 16 digs for her fourth-straight double-double to begin the season. Senior Macy McElhaney, junior Lydia Montague and sophomore Anna Calcagno had nine kills each. Calcagno led the team in attack percentage at .318 and also recorded her 100th career kill in the fourth set. Graduate Destiny Leon had three kills while graduate Sydney Lostumo, junior Essence Clerkley and freshman Brynn Brown added two each. For Brown, it was the first kills of her career.
Â
As a team, the Herd racked up 14 total blocks. Leon continues to put up big numbers on defense at the net with nine total blocks (one solo and eight assist). Leon's streak is now at 46-straight matches with at least one block, and she has put up at least five in all four matches to begin the season. McElhaney had four blocks. Montague, Clerkley and Calcagno had three blocks each. Along with recording her first career kills, Brown added her first career blocks as well with two.
Â
Lostumo led the Herd with 32 assists, her 12th-straight match with 30 or more and 19th in-a-row of 20 or more helpers. She added on 14 digs for her third double-double of the year. Lostumo also had two aces to give her a team-leading nine this season. Senior libero Sarah Schank led in digs with 21, her fourth-straight with 20 or more to begin the season. Schank needs just five more digs to reach 800 in her career. Junior Meagan Camden finished the day with eight digs and one assist.
Â
The first set was a back-and-forth battle early and into the middle of the period. It featured six ties and two lead changes. DePaul started out in front until Marshall took a brief lead at 4-3 off a Blue Demons error. DePaul regained the lead and later finally stayed out front for good at 14-13. The Herd struggled offensively in the set, and unfortunately the rough times continued into the second set.
Â
After the score was tied at 1-1 in the second set, DePaul jumped out in front and stayed there through the rest of the frame. The Herd trailed 2-0 in the match and needed to rebound quickly to avoid being swept.
Â
Marshall came out strong in the third set and quickly ran out to a 7-1 lead. The defense had five blocks in the third set to help keep the Herd out in front. DePaul battled back, but Marshall led the entire way after a brief tie early at 1-1. A block from Leon and McElhaney finished the set and kept the Herd alive for a fourth set.
Â
Marshall's offense sprang to life in the fourth set with a team hitting percentage of .371. Calcagno led the way with six kills and hit .455. Marshall then rolled out a 5-0 run of its own to go up 21-14. A kill from Leon ended the set and pushed the match to the decisive fifth set.
Â
In the final frame, DePaul took the lead in the beginning and did not look back taking the five-set victory.
