Up next for Herd is the Southeast Missouri State Invitational

Game Books: WRIGHT STATE | BALL STATE

DAYTON, Ohio – The Marshall volleyball team fell in its final two matches in the trip to Wright State on Saturday. The Herd lost in four sets (26-24, 22-25, 18-25, 14-25) to Wright State and then in five sets (18-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 11-15) to Ball State.

The Thundering Herd is now 2-4.

"This weekend was a really good test for us as a unit," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We had some great defensive plays and did some really nice things against two really strong teams. We have to execute the ball and become more terminal offensively in order to pull off these wins. We were pushed and I'm proud of our efforts and excited to get to work and continue to get better this coming week."

Game One: Wright State 3, Marshall 1
The Herd battled to comeback in the first set, but then fell in the next three as the host team Raiders grabbed the win.

Marshall recorded 17 team blocks in the loss, the most blocks since Nov. 8, 2019 at FIU when the Herd also had 17. Junior Lydia Montague led the way with a career-high 10. Fifth-year senior Destiny Leon recorded six and increased a couple of streaks that also continued into the next match against Ball State. Senior Macy McElhaney and junior Essence Clerkley had five blocks each. Fifth-year senior Sydney Lostumo and sophomore Anna Calcagno had two each and graduate Ciara Debell had one.

Leon led the Herd on offense with 15 kills and hit at a .464 clip. Debell finished with 10 kills and 16 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. McElhaney and Montague had seven kills each with Clerkley adding four.

Senior libero Sarah Schank tallied 22 digs to lead the Herd, her fifth contest of the season with 20 or more. Schank also recorded her 800th career dig in the match. McElhaney tallied a career-high 10 digs. Junior Meagan Camden finished with eight digs.

Lostumo led the team in assists with 31, her fifth match of the year with 30 or more. Freshman Brynn Brown contributed nine assists.

The first set was a tight battle that featured eight ties and three lead changes. Wright State pulled out to a four-point lead at 23-19 and looked to close it out. However, the Herd went on a furious comeback following a timeout. Leon got it started with a kill and two-straight Raiders' errors put Marshall down by one, 23-22. Wright State scored next to move it to set-point. But the Herd kept fighting. A block from Montague and Calcagno gave Marshall a 25-24 lead. Montague finished the set with a solo block for the 26-24 win. The junior middle blocker finished the frame with four blocks. Leon was a perfect 5-for-5 on her attack attempts.

In the second set, Wright State jumped out to the early lead and held it through most of the period. The Herd kept fighting and tied the score for the first time in the set at 19-19. A kill from Leon gave Marshall a 21-20 lead. Wright State rebounded and finished on a 5-1 run to even the match at 1-1.

The Herd led early in the third set until the Raiders stepped out in front and remained there for the rest of the period. Wright State took a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set started as a back-and-forth battle with three ties and one lead change early. The set was tied at 7-7 before Wright State took the lead and held on for the win.

Game Two: Ball State 3, Marshall 2
Marshall had a thriller to end the weekend, but just couldn't quite pull it out falling in five sets to Ball State. The match featured a total of 25 score ties and 14 lead changes.

Ciara Debell continues to be a double-double machine as she finished the match with a season-high 19 kills and 15 digs. Debell has recorded a double-double in all six matches to start the 2021 season. The graduate also added a season-high five total blocks. Debell has 1,147 kills in her Marshall career (1,233 in her collegiate career) and moved ahead of Amber Sims (2002-05) for ninth-place all-time in program history. Debell needs seven more to pass Ally Kiekover (2013-16) for eighth place.

Anna Calcagno recorded a career-high 14 kills with a .316 attack percentage. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Fogo came through with a career-best nine kills and tied another career-high with four total blocks. Essence Clerkley had two kills and added three more blocks.

The Herd defense finished with 18 total blocks. Montague again led the way with eight. Leon tallied seven more moving her consecutive matches with a block streak to 48-straight and has put up at least five blocks in all six matches to begin the season. The fifth-year senior tallied 23 total blocks during the Marshall Invite and added 22 more over the last three contests. Leon already has 45 total blocks this season and is averaging 1.67 per set. She moved ahead of Kelly Borestler (1993-94) for 10th all-time in career solo blocks with 54, and surpassed Lauren Legge (2012-15) in career block assists up to 195.

Sydney Lostumo finished with 32 assists increasing her streak to 14-straight matches with 30 or more. Brynn Brown tallied 14 assists and 16 digs for her first career double-double.

Sarah Schank recorded 26 digs, her 21st-straight match with 10 or more and sixth in-a-row with 20 or more. She is now up to 843 career digs and is averaging 5.22 digs per set this season. Meagan Camden set a career-high with 13 digs and was a perfect 19-for-19 on serve receptions. In limited action, junior Megan Taylor had one kill and Macy McElhaney had a solo block.

The first set had five ties and three lead changes early before Ball State took control at 12-11. The Cardinals dominated the rest of the set and took a 1-0 lead.

Marshall came storming back in the second set. There were five ties and two lead changes, however the Herd took control of the set at 7-6 and stayed in front for the rest of the frame. Marshall's defense recorded seven total team blocks. Leon was a part of six with two solo and four block assists in the set. On the offensive side, the Herd hit .367 and committed only three attack errors in 30 attempts. Marshall tied the match at 1-1 and showed the fans in attendance what kind of show they were in for.

The third set was a tight battle with five more ties and two lead changes again. This time when Ball State took control late, Marshall kept it close. The Cardinals moved it to set-point at 24-20, then the Herd scored two-straight points to get back within two. Ball State scored the final point to take a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set had six ties and four lead changes as Ball State tried to end the day and the Herd fought to stay alive. Both teams put together impressive runs as no lead seemed to be safe. The Cardinals tied the set at 21-21, then Marshall used a 3-0 run to move to set-point. Ball State added one more point before Debell tallied her sixth kill of the set to tie the match back up at 2-2.

The fifth set was another great showing for both teams and with four ties and three lead changes. Marshall's defense came through with three-straight blocks to take an 8-6 lead and forced Ball State to call a timeout. The Cardinals responded after the break to take back the lead and finally take the match.

Marshall returns to the court Sept. 10-11 at the Southeast Missouri State Invitational. The Herd is set to take on Southeast Missouri State, Kansas City, Arkansas State and Memphis.
