Wolgemuth makes two saves to preserve shutout
MONROE, La. – The Marshall University women's soccer team (2-6-3, 1-2-1 SBC) took a valuable road point Saturday at Brown Stadium in Monroe. The Thundering Herd and the Warhawks played to a goalless draw in the afternoon heat.
Marshall controlled the pace of the match, outshooting ULM 18-7. The Thundering Herd gathered 56 percent of the possession against the Warhawks, who entered the match with a 9-2-1 record. Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan recognized the importance of the road point, while acknowledging the chances his side had.
"While we're disappointed to not come away with all three points today, we are happy to come away with something out of the game that we dominated," Swan said. "Some of the play today was excellent and our game plan to stop ULM playing to their strengths was executed really well today."
Senior Morgan White led the Herd with five shots. Senior Kat Gonzalez had four shots, three of which were on goal. Freshman Madison Fitzpatrick had Marshall's best chance on goal right before the halftime whistle. A through ball from Gonzalez put the forward from Nokesville, Virginia with a path on goal but the ULM keeper was able to make the crucial save to prevent the visitors from getting in front.
Defensively, the Herd kept ULM away from goal, pitching its second clean sheet of the season. Freshman Alexis Wolgemuth made two saves. The back line led by junior Campbell George and freshman Madison Townes limited the Warhawks to seven total shots.
Marshall climbs to 5th in the Sun Belt East conference standings. Coach Swan's side has collected four points in its last two matches with six regular season matches remaining.
"We are improving every time we play and today was another example of that." Swan said.
