Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (7-16, 1-10 Sun Belt) dropped a narrow 3-2 decision (24-26, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 15-10) to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (16-8, 8-3 Sun Belt) on Friday night in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
"I am so proud of the bounce back from this squad from our last conference matches," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the match. "We've not been able to find our flow, and even though we came up short, the pieces are finally starting to come together. The continual work and buy in from this group is something truly unique. We're so excited to get another opportunity tomorrow."
Graduate student Macy McElhaney recorded a double-double with a team-high 17 kills and 10 digs in the match. The Beaver, Pennsylvania, native also had a .300 hitting percentage three service aces and three blocks, two solo in the contest.
Senior Lydia Montague and junior Regan Tinkle each had 13 kills in the match.
Freshman Bella Thompson led the Herd with 25 assists with graduate student Kaitlyn Gehler leading the way with 23 digs.
The two sides traded the first 10 points of the opening set as the score was tied 5-5. Coastal Carolina then jumped out to a 14-9 lead. However, MU answered with a 5-0 rally, led by kills from senior, Essence Clerkley, Montague and redshirt junior Olivia Fogo with a service ace by Gehler, to pull even, 14-14. After a pair of service aces by McElhaney, Marshall grabbed an 18-17 advantage. Despite facing set point with the Chanticleers up 24-23, the Herd rattled off three straight points to take the first set 26-24.
The two sides traded the first 16 points of the second stanza with the score knotted in a stalemate, 8-8. CCU took the lead on the next point and held it the rest of way as MU fell 25-17 in the set.
Marshall sat at a 20-14 disadvantage late in the third set. However, after taking eight of the next 10 points, including the last two points on kills by Macy McElhaney and Montague, the score was tied 22-22. The Herd sealed the set with a kill by McElhaney and a Coastal attacking error to take it 25-23.
The Green and White battled the Chanticleers in the fourth and fifth sets, but couldn't overcome deficits in the final two frames falling by the close scores of 25-20 and 15-10, respectively.
