STATE COLLEGE, Pa.- The Marshall cross country teams finished their 2022 campaigns in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals. The women finished ranked in the region with their 13th place finish. The men finished 15th in the soggy conditions at Penn State University.
With the finish, both the Marshall men's and women's cross country programs finished top 15 at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals for the first time in school history.
"We made history today," Head Coach Caleb Bowen said. "This was the first time in Marshall history we had both the men and women's teams finish in the top 15, and Abby Herring finished All-Region! It was a fun race and I'm so proud we finished the year on a high note."
The Thundering Herd women's 13th place finish out of 26 schools is the women's highest finish in program history. Junior Abby Herring finished 22nd, the highest finish for a Marshall women's runner since Adriana Cook in 2016 (49th).
Abby Herring paced the Herd, just as she has in each of Marshall's six meets this season with a 6K time of 20:57.5. Herring has led the Marshall women's team at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals every season she competed at Marshall, in both 2019 (105th) and 2021 (54th) and now 2022 (2020 meet not held).
The next three finishers for the Herd included a pack of sophomore Kylee Mastin (22:04.6) in 65th, senior Sydney Smith in 70th (22:06.9) and freshman Hannah Wyler in 76th (22:16.6).
Marshall men's 15th place finish is a six-place improvement from last season's 21st place finish at the meet.
All-Sun Belt honoree Evan White led the men's squad for the second straight year at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals with a 67th place finish in Marshall's first 10K of the year, and a time of 31:40.2. His time is a substantial improvement from last year when he paced the Herd at the meet with a time of 33:01.1 and a 90th place finish.
Freshman Matthew Schenenberg came through next in 84th in 32:05.0. The trio of Braden Wood, Brett Armbruster and Kazuma Bowring finished 93rd, 100th and 112th, respectively to round out Marshall's top-five.
