Herd victorious over App State for the sixth win of the season.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va- Two days shy of the 52nd anniversary of the Nov. 14, 1970 plane crash that claimed 75 Marshall players, coaches, staff, and community members, the Marshall Thundering Herd paid the ultimate tribute.
Coach Charles Huff's Herd defeated the visiting App State Mountaineers, 28-21, in front of a Joan C. Edwards' homecoming crowd of 24,312.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Cam Fancher threw two touchdowns, throwing for 225 yards, completing 16 of 28 passes.
Marshall (6-4, 3-3 Sun Belt) drove right down the field on the opening possession, with sixth-year running back Khalan Laborn rushing for his 14th touchdown of the season. Fancher completed five passes on the opening drive.
After a Micah Abraham interception which saw the Herd leading 7-0 with 11:14 on the second quarter clock, the Marshall offense took control again. MU followed with a nine play, 80 yard drive which was capped with Fancher's pass to redshirt-sophomore receiver Jayden Harrison from five yards out to put the Herd in front, 14-0.
App State (5-5, 2-4 Sun Belt) capitalized off a muffed punt to score right before the half. A one yard Daetrich Harrington rush represented the first time the MU defense had allowed an opponent in the endzone in over 135 minutes of game action. Marshall went into the break leading 14-7.
The Thundering Herd special teams played a role in the third quarter. Redshirt-junior Shadeed Ahmed blocked the Mountaineers' punt in the end zone which was recovered by freshman Danisus Miller in the end zone to make it 21-7.
After App State responded on the ensuing kickoff for a 96 yard kick return, the MU offense had their own rebuttal. Fancher's second passing score in the form of a 19 yard pass to redshirt-junior Corey Gammage put the Herd back up 28-14 entering the fourth.
The Mountaineers scored on the first play of the final frame to make it a one-possession game at 28-21. But from there, the Marshall defense delivered as it so often has in 2022.
With just over five minutes remaining, on a 4th and 1 from the MU 13, junior linebacker Eli Neal brought down a scrambling App State QB Chase Brice to preserve the lead. Neal finished as the defense's leading tackler with nine takedowns.
The Mountaineers would get one last chance in the waning seconds, only for the defense to come up with one final stop to preserve the victory.
Marshall faces another former foe in Georgia Southern next week, Saturday, November 19. Kickoff from Paulson Stadium in Statesboro will be at 6:00 p.m.
The Marshall University Fountain Ceremony will be held on Monday, Nov. 14 on the Memorial Student Center plaza at noon. The university will provide a livestream for fans unable to attend. https://www.marshall.edu/livestream.Team Stats
