Herd Takes Second at Marshall Invitational

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Thundering Herd's indoor track and field team finished second with 165 points at this weekend's Marshall Invitational in Huntington. The meet was held at Jeff Small Track inside the Chris Cline Indoor Athletics Complex.

App State won the meet with 215 points. Northern Kentucky (71) was third, followed by UNC Asheville (66), West Virginia (44.5), Wright State (43.5), Morehead State (23), Winthrop (13) and Eastern Kentucky (3).

Mikah Alleyne got another victory in the 200 meters, with a time of 24.36 seconds. That is the second-fastest time in Conference USA this season. Ashonti Warner (third, 24.93) and Jillian King (5th, 25.64) also recorded top-five finishes.

MU swept the top three spots in the 1000 meters as Abby Herring (2:58.46), Kylee Mastin (3:01.85) and Meagan Ward (3:03.17) all found their way to the podium.

Tyra Thomas (8.67 meters) and Krista Perry (8.77) went 1-2 in the 60 meter hurdles for the Thundering Herd.

Rebecca Merritt (12.28 meters) notched a second-place finish in the shot put, while MaryAnn Adebayo and Brooke Burns (12.27) tied for third.

The Herd was all over the 800-meter top five as well as Astoria Beckett came in second in 2:18.05, followed by Erica Murphy (third, 2:18.78) and Victoria Dotson (fifth, 2:22.09).

Sydney Smith (5:08.16) and Kalei Jordan (5:13.44) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the mile run.

Itzel Santos led the way in the 400 meters with a sixth-place time of 59.17 seconds, while Kyleigh Edwards paced the team in the 3000 meters (ninth, 10:37.44).

Maria Parra also took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.49 meters.

"We changed some things up by running some people in different events," said Marshall head coach Jeff Small. "I thought we had a really good weekend, which started with Dianna Goodman's school-record pole vault (3.97 meters) last night. Mikah (Alleyne) ran the league's second-fastest time in the 200 and we had personal bests all over the place.

"Our field and distance events were strong, as well. Overall, I was pleased as we look forward to a great conference meet next weekend."

That meet will be the 2022 Conference USA Championships, which will be held next Saturday and Sunday at Birmingham's Crossplex. The meet will be live streamed on CUSA.tv.
