CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall softball team lost its two opening games of the Battle at the Beach, hosted by Coastal Carolina on Friday. Marshall fell 7-5 to South Carolina and then 4-3 to Coastal Carolina.

The Thundering Herd is now 3-3.

Marshall returns to action tomorrow against the same two teams. The Herd will take on South Carolina at 10 a.m. and then Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m. Fans can tune into both games on 88.1 WMUL-FM with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul. There will be a video stream simulcast on Facebook Live for the South Carolina game. There will not be a video stream for the game against Coastal Carolina.

Game One: South Carolina 7, Marshall 5
The game began as a score-fest with all 12 runs tallied by the end of the fourth. The contest ended as a defensive struggle with both teams making great plays.

South Carolina started the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead.

Marshall responded with three runs in the top of the second. Fifth-year senior Saige Pye led off with a double down the right field line. Freshman Lauren Love and fifth-year senior Madison Whitaker drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Two batters later, redshirt sophomore Autumn Owen was at the plate and the first pitch ended up in the back stop. Redshirt freshman Amaya Lee, who was in to run for Pye, scored on the wild pitch to give the Herd its first run. Love then scored on a sacrifice fly from Owen. Whitaker crossed the plate when senior Grace Chelemen legged out an infield single.

The Gamecocks responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to take back the lead, 5-3.

Marshall kept fighting scoring two runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 5-5. Pye drew a one out walk and then Love drilled a double into right-center with Pye stopping at third. Two batters later, with two outs, senior Camryn Michallas laced a single into left-center that scored both Pye and Love.

The bottom of the third started with a great diving catch by Mya Stevenson in right. However, South Carolina managed to push one more run across the plate to retake the lead at 6-5. The Gamecocks scored one more in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to two runs.

The Herd did not quite but just could not find the timely hit. Defensively, Love at second and Michallas at third made two great plays to end the fifth and strand a runner at third.

Marshall tallied seven hits. Chelemen had two, both infield singles. Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell recorded her 165th career hit and drew two walks. It was the 35th time that Harrell has drawn at least two walks in a game. Pye had one hit, a walk and run scored. Love also reached base twice and scored two runs. Michallas tied her career-high with two RBI in the loss.

Junior Ashley Blessin started the game in the circle and was pitched into the second. Redshirt junior Cailey Joyce came in to pitch and went the rest of the way, credited with 4.2 innings and struck out two batters. Joyce earned the loss.

Game Two: Coastal Carolina 4, Marshall 3
The Herd took the early lead against the host team but could not keep the offense rolling as the Chanticleers came back for the win.

Aly Harrell started the scoring in the top of the first with a solo home run, her second of the season and 42nd of her career. Harrell and Mya Stevenson are tied again for second all-time in program history.

Marshall tacked on two more runs in the top of the third when Saige Pye cranked a two-run shot to center, scoring Harrell. It was Pye's second home run of the season and 17th of her career. The hit was also the ninth homer of the year for the Herd. Marshall led 3-0.

The Chanticleers had chances earlier in the game, however, redshirt junior pitcher Sydney Nester and the defense kept coming through with clutch plays to get out of jams. Coastal Carolina stranded two runners on base in the first and fifth, all in scoring position. The Chanticleers scored its first run in the fourth, and then redshirt senior Armani Brown snagged a liner near the second base bag to end the inning. Nester ended the fifth inning with her sixth strikeout, keeping the lead at two, 3-1.

Coastal Carolina took advantage of some Herd miscues in the bottom of the sixth to score three runs and take the lead, 4-3, and then held on in the top of the seventh for the win.

Harrell was 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, one RBI and one run. Madison Whitaker had two hits and Camryn Michallas had one. Whitaker's second hit of the game was the 100th of her collegiate career.

Nester pitched the complete game and took the loss. She allowed only one earned run and struck out eight.
