Game One: South Carolina 7, Marshall 3
The Herd kept it close throughout most of the game, but in the end could not find the timely hits in the loss to the Gamecocks.
South Carolina led 4-0 after the top half of the third. Marshall showed fight in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, senior Grace Chelemen drew a walk after going through an 11-pitch at bat against Karsen Ochs. Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell pushed Chelemen to second with a single up the middle. Sophomore Kay Kay Kenney then stepped to the plate and sent the third pitch of the at bat well over the fence in center.
Kenney is the seventh different player to hit a home run this season for Marshall.
The Herd held down South Carolina until the top of the seventh when the Gamecocks added three more runs.
Harrell and Kenney had two hits each. Chelemen, freshman Lauren Love, senior Mya Stevenson and fifth-year senior Saige Pye had one hit apiece.
Redshirt junior Sydney Nester had the start and pitched into the seventh inning. She tallied nine strikeouts and took the loss. Freshman Bub Feringa finished the game recording the last two outs. Feringa had one strikeout.
Game Two: Marshall 9, Coastal Carolina 7
The Herd came out in attack mode in the nightcap against Coastal Carolina and received a great performance in the circle from redshirt junior pitcher Cailey Joyce. Marshall's defense made some great plays as well throughout the contest.
In the bottom of the first, Lauren Love started a double play by catching a liner at second base and then tossing to Aly Harrell at first to double up the runner.
In the top of the second, Marshall's offense put together some clutch hits and took advantage of three hit batters to score four runs. Saige Pye led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Love followed up reaching base safely on an errant throw on a bunt attempt. Redshirt freshman Amaya Lee came in to run at second for Pye. Two batters, later fifth-year senior Katie Adams was the second player to get hit by a pitch that loaded the bases.
Senior Camryn Michallas drilled a single into left that plated Lee and Love to start the scoring. Redshirt sophomore Autumn Owen kept the inning going with a single that loaded the bases again. Harrell was the third batter to get plunked in the inning, scoring Adams from third. The final run of the second was Michallas, scoring on a sacrifice fly to center by Grace Chelemen. Mya Stevenson then drew a walk to load the bases again with two outs, bringing on a pitching change by the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina finally ended the inning on the next batter.
The Chanticleers scored one run in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to three, 4-1. Joyce recorded three strikeouts in the second with two looking to end the frame and stranding a runner on base.
Coastal Carolina put two runners on in the third, however Joyce and the Herd defense made the plays to get out of the inning again.
Owen smacked her first home run in a Marshall uniform, and the 18th of her collegiate career, in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to left-center. Owen is the eighth different Herd hitter to record a home run in 2022. Harrell followed up with a single and then Chelemen hit a double that brought on another pitching change. Marshall ended the inning leading 5-1.
Joyce ended the fourth with her fourth strikeout of the game and then induced a pop up to Harrell at first to strand two runners on base in the fifth. Coastal Carolina stranded two more runners on base in the sixth.
The Herd blasted two more homers in the top of the seventh to take an eight-run lead, 9-1. Stevenson led off with her third home run of the season and 43rd of her career, breaking her tie with Harrell for second all-time in team history. Freshman Rielly Lucas came in to pinch hit and delivered her first career hit with a single to center. Lucas took second on a wild pitch, then later took third on another wild pitch. Next, Kay Kay Kenney reached on an infield error that scored Lucas.
Bub Feringa stepped up next for a pinch hit, and smashed her first career home run on her first career plate appearance. Feringa is the fifth player in team history to hit a home run in their first plate appearance, and the first since Briana Daiss hit a walkoff against Alabama State in the 2016 season opener. Feringa is also the ninth player to hit a homer this season for the Herd, and the 19th different player to hit one over the fence in the head coach Megan Smith Lyon era.
Coastal Carolina fought back in the bottom of the seventh scoring six runs with two players hitting the first home runs of their careers. Sydney Nester came on in relief with two outs, and the game-tying run represented in the on-deck circle. Nester recorded the last out with a ground out to Owen at third on the first batter she faced.
Joyce earned the win, her first of the year pitching 6.2 innings and tallied six strikeouts. Joyce had several key pitches throughout the game to help shut down the high-powered Chanticleers on earlier opportunities. Nester picked up the save, her first of her Marshall career.
The Herd's offense finished with 10 hits from nine different players. Owen was the only batter with two hits.
