CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall softball team closed out the weekend with an 8-0, five-inning win over the Fordham Rams on Sunday on the final day of the Battle at the Beach. Fifth-year senior Katie Adams hit her first career grand slam and redshirt junior pitcher Sydney Nester struck out 10 batters to earn her third shutout of the season.

The Thundering Herd improved to 5-4 overall. The Rams drop to 3-7.

Marshall's offense got rolling right from the start despite not scoring any runs in the first inning, Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell led off with a hit-by-pitch. It was the second time this year that Harrell has been plunked and the 38th time in her career, tying her for third all-time in team history with Rebecca Gamby (2009-12). Two batters later, senior Mya Stevenson hit a double to left. Fordham got out of the inning stranding both runners on base.

Nester and the Herd defense also started clicking in the first. Nester struck out the first two batters and then finished the inning with her third strikeout after an infield single.

Marshall started scoring in the second. Redshirt sophomore Autumn Owen reached on a single to left and then senior Camryn Michallas got aboard. Harrell drew a walk to load the bases for senior Grace Chelemen. The Woodhaven, Michigan, native delivered with a single to right that plated Owen and Michallas to give the Herd a 2-0 lead.

The Rams put two runners on base in the bottom of the second, however Nester ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts to bring her total to five.

Adams gave Marshall a 6-0 lead in the third with the grand slam to right-center. Stevenson, fifth-year senior Saige Pye and sophomore Kay Kay Kenney all reached on walks to load the bases. Adams recorded her second homer of the season, ninth of her career, and first career grand slam with the blast coming on an 0-2 count. The Rams made a pitching change following the home run.

Fordham got runners on base yet again in the bottom of the third, but the Marshall defense came through. With runners at second and third, Nester fielded a grounder by the circle and then made a great throw to Owen to tag out the runner at third attempting to dive back. Still with two runners on base, Nester recorded her seventh strikeout to end the inning.

The Herd added two more runs in the fourth. Harrell led off the inning with a double to left-center. Chelemen then reached on an infield single. Freshman Alex Coleman entered the game to run for Harrell at second. Stevenson stepped up and ripped her second double of the game driving in Coleman. Two batters later, freshman Lauren Love drove home Chelemen on a ground out to second.

The Rams led off the bottom of the fourth putting two runners on base. Again, Marshall came up big when it was needed. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position and recorded the first out. Nester then sat down a pinch hitter on three pitches, eighth strikeout of the game. Next, Owen fielded a grounder at third and made a diving tag on the runner at third for the final out.

The Herd put two runners on in the top of the fifth as freshman Bub Feringa had a single to right and freshman Rielly Lucas drew a walk. Marshall could not add any more runs.

With the 8-run mercy-rule in effect, Fordham needed to score just one run to push the game into the sixth. Nester struck out the first two batters to reach 10. It was her third double-digit strikeout game of the season in just seven appearances. Chelemen caught the final out of the game on a fly ball near the warning track in center.

Fordham ended the game leading seven runners on base.

Marshall finished with eight hits. Chelemen and Stevenson had two hits each. Harrell reached base safely three times with a hit-by-pitch, walk and a double. Fordham pitchers walked six total batters.

Nester earned her fourth win of the season, and third complete-game shutout. She allowed just four hits.

The Herd gets back into action, Feb. 25-27, at the Camel Stampede hosted by Campbell University. Marshall will play Campbell, Kent State and Howard.
