The game started with a great defensive play by the Herd. The leadoff batter for the Bison got on board with a double. The next batter popped out into foul territory that was caught against the fence by senior shortstop Camryn Michallas. The Bison runner attempted to take third, however, starting pitcher Cailey Joyce raced over to cover the bag and put down the tag after the throw from Michallas for the second out.
In the bottom of the first, Aly Harrell and Love got on board with back-to-back base hits. Fifth-year senior Katie Adams drove in the first run with a double to right that plated Harrell. Senior Mya Stevenson then reached on a walk to load the bases. Freshman Bub Feringa drove in Love to give the Herd a 2-0 lead. Saige Pye kept it rolling with a single down the left field line that scored Adams. Freshman Rielly Lucas in her first career start, tallied the fifth hit of the inning to load the bases again. Next, Michallas outran an infield single that scored Feringa to give the Herd a 4-0 lead.
Freshman Alex Coleman, also in her first career start, drew a bases loaded walk for her first career RBI as the inning kept rolling. Two batters later, Love plated two more runs with a single to center as Michallas and Coleman scored. Adams then drew a walk before Stevenson hit a ball to center that was misplayed by the centerfielder after hitting the turf. The ball rolled back to the fence with Love and Adams both scoring and Stevenson sliding into third. The inning finally ended on the next batter.
Marshall scored one more run in the second as Pye led off the inning with a walk, then took second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Coleman recorded her first career hit with a single down the right field line, driving in Pye. The Herd led 11-0.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the third. Love led off with her third hit of the game and then Adams hit a single. Stevenson drove in Love with a double to left-center and then Lucas plated Adams and Stevenson to extend Marshall's lead to 14-0.
The Herd's final run came in the bottom of the fourth when Love drove in Coleman with a double.
Howard scored one run in top of the fourth and another in the fifth.
Love is the first Marshall freshman to record four hits in a game since Stevenson hit for the cycle on March 16, 2019, at Charlotte. Love also tallied three RBI, scored three runs and reached base six out of the seven times that she stepped to the plate between the two games.
